Blue Devils' Season Ends too Soon ...
The Duke women's basketball team used the best turnaround among power five conferences to set the Blue Devils up for a NCAA Tournament bid in 2019-20, but the season was cut short due to COVID-19. With an 18-12 overall record and after a third place finish in the ACC, Duke was set to make its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance. With a No. 27 RPI, the Blue Devils had the third-highest ranking in the ACC.
All-America Honors...
Duke graduate
Haley Gorecki has been named the 10th Blue Devil to earn United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America honors as she received third team accolades.
Gorecki joined Alison Bales (2007), Alana Beard (2004, 2003, 2002), Chante Black (2009), Monique Currie (2006, 2005), Chelsea Gray (2012), Lindsey Harding (2007),
Georgia Schweitzer (2001), Jasmine Thomas (2010) and Elizabeth Williams (2015) as Duke's USBWA All-America selections. Gorecki was the first Blue Devil to earn the honor since Williams in 2015.
She also earned WBCA Region I All-America and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America.
Turnarounds...
After opening ACC action with a 1-3 record, the Blue Devils won 11 out of the final 14 contests.
It was the best turnaround for the Blue Devils since 2017-18 when Duke opened 0-2 in the league and then won nine out of its next 11 contests. Duke finished with an 11-5 record in the ACC that season.
Duke went from near the bottom of the ACC to finishing No. 3 in the ACC in 2019-20.
Duke, Kansas State and Iowa State were the only teams in power five conferences in 2019-20 to start sub .500 (1-3 or below) in its first four games and complete conference play with a winning record. ISU and KSU both started 1-3 and finished with a 10-8 conference record, four games worse than Duke.

Haley Gorecki ranked second in the ACC with 166 made free throws and third with 194 attempts, while ranking third with an 85.6 free throw percentage. Her 166 free throws made ranked ninth nationally.

Kyra Lambert hit a three-pointer in a career-best 12 straight games to close the season and hit 19-of-46 (41.3) during that streak.

Haley Gorecki averaged 36.0 minutes a contest last season and averaged 36.5 minutes in 2019-20. She became the first Blue Devil to average 35.0 minutes or more in back-to-back seasons.
• Duke trailed, 40-33, heading into the fourth quarter against Notre Dame and rallied for a 50-47 victory. It was the Blue Devils' largest comeback in the fourth quarter since the NCAA moved to the quarter system in 2015-16.

Gorecki Concludes Stellar Two-Year Run...
Over the last two years,
Haley Gorecki turned in two of the best back-to-back seasons in Duke and ACC history.
She combined to total 1,069 points, 412 rebounds, 247 assists, 141 steals and 28 blocked shots over the last two years. She drained 118 three-pointers and hit 281 free throws.
Gorecki became just the sixth Blue Devil in school history to notch back-to-back 500-point seasons -- Alana Beard, Lexie Brown, Monique Currie, Chris Moreland and Jasmine Thomas.
Akinbode-James Closes Strong...
Sophomore
Onome Akinbode-James closed the regular season strong scoring double-digits in two out of the last three contests. Over those three contests, she averaged 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals.
It marked the first two double-digit scoring performances against ACC foes this season and the first since Dec. 4 at Nebraska.
Akinbode-James collected 12 points and six boards at NC State and 10 points at North Carolina. She took three charges in the first half at UNC and led Duke with 10 charges taken on the season.

Haley Gorecki became just the second ACC player in league history to lead their team in points, rebounds and assists in back-to-back seasons.
She joined Laine Selwyn of Pitt, who accomplished this mark in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

Mikayla Boykin averaged 8.3 points, 4.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals over her final eight games. During that stretch, she hit 9-of-21 treys (42.9%).
She had been limited to under 20 minutes in January but her minute restriction was lifted in February.
Boykin scored double-digits six times in 17 games.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, the ACC office announced the All-ACC teams, after a vote by the Blue Ribbon Panel and the league head coaches.
Haley Gorecki headlined the honors earning All-ACC First Team accolades by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and ACC head coaches, while also being tabbed to the All-ACC Defensive Team by the coaches.

Leaonna Odom was voted to the All-ACC Second Team for the first time in her career by the Blue Ribbon Panel and the coaches.
Williams Nets First...
For the first time in her three-year career,
Jade Williams totaled double-figure scoring in five straight contests, before scoring only 10 points over the next three games. She did notch 12 points in the last game against Boston College in the ACC Tournament.
During that stretch, she averaged 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.0 steals. She hit 27-of-43 field goals for a 62.8 percentage. Williams had a season-high 16 points at Miami as she hit 7-of-10 field goals.
Clutch!...
Haley Gorecki came through big time in the clutch over her career and especially at the end of the season notching 20+ points in 40 minutes during top 15 wins over NC State and Florida State.
Gorecki scored Duke's final five points against the Wolfpack and scored 13 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter. She also scored Duke's final four points versus FSU to seal the win.
Tight League Games...
Duke was so close early in ACC play but struggled to close out five of the games. Nine of Duke's 18 ACC games were decided by six points or less.
The Blue Devils lost their first five ACC games by a combined 17 points. All five of those losses were within five points.

In ACC contests, Duke's defense was among the best in the conference in a number of key categories.
In 18 league games, Duke's defense ranked in the top five in scoring defense (4th, 59.67), field goal percentage defense (3rd, 38.0), blocks (5th, 4.1), steals (1st, 10.2) and three-point field goal percentage defense (2nd, 26.1).
Best All-Around Player...
No Duke player had averaged at least 17.0 points, 3.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds in back-to-back seasons until
Haley Gorecki these past two seasons.
She averaged 17.2 points, 3.9 assists, and 7.1 rebounds in 2018-19 and in 2019-20 she averaged 18.5 points, 4.4 assists and 6.6 rebounds.
Alana Beard came closest to these thresholds, averaging 19.8 points, 4.4 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in her sophomore year and 22.0 points, 3.0 assists, and 6.9 rebounds her junior year.
Against UNC, Gorecki collected 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. She became the first Blue Devil to register a 25-point, 10-rebound and 5-assist contest since Beard on Jan. 16, 2003.

Haley Gorecki ranked second in the ACC in scoring (19.2).
She ranked tied for 20th in rebounds (6.6), 11th in field goal percentage (41.6), sixth in free throw percentage (83.5), T10th in three-point field goals made (2.1), second in minutes played (37.71), 13th in assist/turnover ratio (1.3) and ninth in three-point percentage (33.3).
Gorecki also ranked sixth in assists (4.7) and second in steals (2.3).
Gorecki Nets ACC Player of the Week...
For the second time this season,
Haley Gorecki was tabbed the ACC Player of the Week March 2, following a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Gorecki closed the regular season with three games on the road in seven days, while averaging 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.7 steals. She helped lead Duke to a, 70-65, upset victory at eighth-ranked NC State with 24 points, five assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block in 40 minutes, while having only one turnover. The 6-0 guard scored Duke's final five points of the contest to seal the victory for the Blue Devils.
Gorecki closed the regular season with another outstanding all-around game at North Carolina with 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals as Duke secured the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament with a 73-54 victory. She hit 8-of-14 field goals and drained four treys in 39 minutes. Gorecki has now faced UNC five times over her career and totaled 20 or more points in four of those games.
She added 13 points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds on the road at Virginia Tech in a 70-56 loss.

Haley Gorecki became the second Blue Devil this season to reach 1,000 points and the 35th overall Duke player to hit the mark against Boston College with her 27 points. She accomplished this mark in only 77 contests, becoming the 10th-quickest Blue Devil to do so.

Lambert Returns in a Big Way...
At the 2:41 mark of the first quarter during the season opener against High Point, graduate
Kyra Lambert entered the contest for the first time in 962 days or two years, seven months and 18 days since she last suited up for Duke.
After tearing her ACL on March 18, 2017 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Hampton, Lambert had gone through three surgeries before returning to action Tuesday.
A native of Cibolo, Texas, Lambert made her presence felt quickly on the defensive end registering a steal and showcased her point guard skills that had her ranked in the top 10 nationally coming out of high school. She closed the first quarter in dramatic fashion by draining a 60-foot shot to as time expired to give Duke a 25-13 lead at the break.
Lambert finished the game with a team-high three steals, five points, one rebound and one assist in eight minutes.
Big Second Half for Miela...
Sophomore
Miela Goodchild matched a career-high 26 points against Troy, which was her first 20 or more points output of the 2019-20.
She notched 23 of her 26 points in the second half, including a Duke record 16 in the fourth quarter. It marked her fourth 20-point game of her short career.
Goodchild finished 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from downtown. She added three assists and four rebounds.

Joanne P. McCallie will feature three Duke graduates on staff this season with the addition of
Wanisha Smith (2008) and
Keturah Jackson (2009) over the summer.
Smith was hired as an assistant coach, after helping lead Towson to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. Jackson is a special assistant for the Blue Devils.

Leaonna Odom reached the 1,000-point mark against High Point with her 19 points and then at UNLV she registered her 100th blocked shot.

Freshman
Jaida Patrick made her return to her home state of New York at Syracuse and made a splash with a career-high 11 points, career-high three blocked shots and grabbed five boards in a career-high 16 minutes.
She hit 4-of-10 field goals and 3-of-3 free throws. It marked the first time in ACC play she has played double-digit minutes.
Ezeh Misses 2019-20 Season...
Talented Duke freshman
Jennifer Ezeh missed the 2019-20 campaign, after arriving on campus with a torn ACL and meniscus. She had surgery Sept. 13, 2019.
Ezeh helped lead her New Hope Academy squad to the 2019 National Championship. She was a NACA Basketball All-America and All-Metropolitan Girls Basketball Player in 2019. As a senior, she averaged 15.5 points and 10.1 rebounds.
