DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore
Toby Fournier scored 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Blue Devils to a hard-fought 65-58 victory over Virginia in ACC women's basketball action Thursday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils (12-6, 7-0) finished the game on a 20-7 run to remain extend their win streak to nine games. Duke's 7-0 start to ACC play is the best under head coach
Kara Lawson and the best since the 2012-13 team started 15-0.
Ashlon Jackson finished her night with 12 points, including hitting a pair of crucial fourth-quarter threes, and added five assists.
Arianna Roberson dropped in 10 points, collected six rebounds and blocked two shots in a strong all-around performance. Once again,
Delaney Thomas was her steady self with nine points, three assists and four steals.
Taina Mair joined Jackson as the floor leader with six dimes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fournier and the Blue Devils got off to a strong start, taking a 12-4 lead midway through the first quarter. The sophomore forward registered eight of Duke's 12 points as the Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run to break open a 4-4 tie and force a Cavalier timeout.
- Thomas made it a 10-point game before Sa'Myah Smith ended Virginia's scoring drought at 3:39 to bring the deficit back to single digits.
- It was all Fournier in the first quarter, as the Toronto, Ontario, native swished a three from the top of the arc at the buzzer to send the Blue Devils into the first break up, 23-14. Fournier finished the first 10 minutes with record breaking 15 points.
- Virginia started to chip away at Duke's lead, holding the Blue Devils without a point for 3:30 to make it a 27-22 game with 4:08 to play in the second period. Baskets continued to be hard to come by for the Blue Devils, as the scoring drought extended to 5:15 before Thomas notched an old-fashioned three-point play to push Duke's lead back to eight, 30-22.
- Mair got into the scoring column in the final 30 seconds, draining a three from the left side to put Duke up, 35-24, at the half.
- Riley Nelson knocked down a jumper to start the third and give Duke its largest lead of the game, 37-24. Virginia answered with an 8-2 spurt to bring the Cavaliers back within seven, 39-32.
- The Cavaliers' defense continued to force Duke into mistakes on its offensive end while capitalizing on opportunities on the other end to make it a two-point contest, 41-39.
- Roberson stepped up with a huge three pointer to put Duke back up five, 44-39. But Virginia refused to go away as Gabby White banked a shot in and Paris Clark sank two free throws to give the Cavaliers their first lead of the game, 45-44, after 30 minutes of action.
- Virginia used a 13-3 run over the final 4:58 of the stanza, holding Duke to only nine points in the quarter.
- The Cavaliers scored six of the first seven points of the fourth period to open up a six-point lead, 51-45.
- It was all Blue Devils over the next three minutes, going on an 11-0 run to jump ahead 56-51. Roberson started the spurt with Duke's first field goal in 6:57 and Fournier backed down her defender to lay it in and pull Duke back within two, 51-49. Roberson drained a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game, 51-51, to force Virginia into a timeout.
- Jackson, coming out of the timeout, scored a transition pull-up three and Nelson sank a jumper to cap the run. Jackson found her shooting touch just in time, draining another three from the left wing to put effectively the game away for Duke.
- The Blue Devils knocked down four free throws in the final 12 seconds to secure the seven-point victory.
- Tabith Amanze led the Cavaliers, scoring 20 points, while pulling down five boards and adding four blocks.
