CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Duke sophomore
Toby Fournier registered a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the 20th-ranked Blue Devils to a 74-58 victory at Miami in ACC women's basketball action Thursday night.
Leading by just five at the end of three quarters, the Blue Devils (15-6, 10-0) outscored Miami (12-9, 4-6) 19-8 in the fourth quarter to extend their win streak to 12 games.
Taina Mair had another strong showing with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Jordan Wood rounded out the double-digit scoring, netting 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Riley Nelson scored Duke's first four points as the Blue Devils used a 7-0 run to jump out to an early 7-2 lead.
- Miami knocked down a three-pointer to bring it back to a two-point game with both teams running the court. Duke responded with the next four points to push the Blue Devils ahead, 11-5, with under four minutes left in the first period.
- Mair came out of the media timeout and drained a three from the left wing and Wood dropped in a free throw to extend Duke's run to 8-0 and lead to 15-5.
- Fournier closed the quarter with six points for the Blue Devils, sending Duke into the second frame up 21-9.
- The Toronto native continued to find ways to score, hitting a free throw, getting to the rim, and then knocking down a trailer three to send the Blue Devils into the second media timeout of the night up 12, 29-17.
- Mair rattled off seven straight points and Wood added three, giving Duke a 39-23 advantage after two quarters.
- The Blue Devils scored five points in 32 seconds to grab their largest lead of the game, 44-25, and force Miami into a timeout.
- The Hurricanes returned the favor, putting together a 7-0 spurt to cut Duke's lead to 12, and force the Blue Devils into a timeout of their own. Miami closed the third quarter on a 9-2 run to pull within five after 30 minutes of action.
- Ra Shaya Kyle had 11 points and Miami hit 69 percent of its shots to finish the third frame with 27 points.
- Delaney Thomas came up with three crucial baskets to open the fourth stanza and push Duke's lead back to nine, 61-52, with 5:56 to play. The Blue Devils played lockdown defense in the final period, holding the Hurricanes without a point for 7:41.
- On the other end of the court, Wood buried a three and Mair drained a mid-range jumper to push the lead back to double digits, 66-52.
- Miami secured four of the next six points, but Duke maintained the 13-point edge with under 90 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils kept the Hurricanes to just two more points to secure the 74-58 triumph.
- Kyle led the Hurricanes with 21 points, while also pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out three assists. Gal Raviv also scored in the double-digits for Miami, netting 16 points.
