DURHAM, N.C. - Duke won in convincing fashion today, 7-0, over the Longwood Lancers at Williams Field on Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils outshot the Lancers 32-1, and had seven different players find the back of the cage.
"It's just good to get a lot of goals," head coach Beth Bozman said. "Our output has not been that great and we needed this as a good confidence booster and to work on a couple things as we head into tomorrow's game."
It was a coming out party for three freshmen, starting with defender Abby Hassinger scoring the first goal of the game in the fifth minute. Hassinger collected an assist on the final goal as well, slotting a pass for senior forward Amie Survilla in the 69th minute. It was Hassinger's first career goal and assist.
In the 31st minute, freshman midfielder Chelsea Amsley put Duke up 3-0, dribbling into the left side of the circle and hitting a low shot from the near post that rattled the right side of the cage. It was Amsley's first goal of her career.
Only a few minutes later, freshman forward Maartje van Rijswijk blasted a shot from the top of the circle off of a Duke corner that notched her first career goal and the Duke's fourth of the game at the 32:33 mark. The trio of first year players accounted for three of the Blue Devil's four first half goals, with sophomore midfielder Tara Jennings scoring the other in the 30th minute.
In the second half it was much of the same, as junior forward Susan Ferger scored on a breakaway in the 41st minute and sophomore forward Jordan Miller scored off an assist from Megan Deakins at the 51:56 mark. Senior defender Lauren Miller also returned to the field after missing the last two games due to a hand injury.
Freshman goalie Micaela Paterson took over in the second half, playing the first minutes of her career in goal for the Blue Devils. Junior goalie Samantha Nelson did not see much action in the first half, with Longwood having no shots on goal. Duke also had 20 penalty corners to the Lancers one.
Duke will be looking to continue their strong offensive performance against No. 15 Old Dominion tomorrow at 1 p.m. on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Lady Monarchs are coming off a 4-0 loss to North Carolina.
"Old Dominion is tough team, they have five losses but they are all against top ranked opponents and we expect a real battle tomorrow," coach Beth Bozman said. "Nobody plays Old Dominion and takes them lightly. We know this is going to be a very tough game."
