DURHAM, N.C.βDuke senior
Alaina McVeigh scored a pair of goals, and the eighth-ranked Blue Devils held Old Dominion to just two shots for a 2-0 win on Senior Day in non-conference field hockey action at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Sunday afternoon.
McVeigh scored in the first and third quarters to cap Duke's regular season home slate. Senior
Macy Szukics provided the assist on the second goal. The Blue Devils improve to 11-5 overall while Old Dominion falls to 7-9.
How it Happened
- Duke once again got off to a fast start, scoring in just the sixth minute on a penalty corner redirect from McVeigh. After earning a penalty corner in the first 20 seconds and firing two shots in the first 4:25, the Blue Devils won a second penalty corner at the 5:13 mark.
- This time sophomore Julia Boehringer was the one with the shot, forcing Suus Broers to go down for the save. McVeigh, coming in at the near post off the insert, was there for the rebound and tap in for the 1-0 lead.
- Duke continued to pepper the Monarch cage in the opening frame, finishing the first 15 minutes with six shots. Broers came away with three saves in the first quarter, keeping the Monarchs within one.
- Five minutes into the second quarter, the Blue Devils found success on the penalty corner again as McVeigh stepped in from her insert and redirected Szukics' sweep for the goal and 2-0 lead at the half.
- The Blue Devils' press frustrated the Monarchs throughout the second half as they struggled to find entry into the penalty circle. Duke held ODU to one shot in the second quarter and one in the fourth and to only one penalty corner.
- Offensively, the Blue Devils were active in and around the circle, firing 14 second-half shots. Broers was outstanding with six saves, including one on a penalty stroke.
- Overall, Duke outshot Old Dominion 24-2 and had nine penalty corners to the Monarchs' one. Kaiya Chepow and Brooke Borzymowski combined to post the Blue Devils' seventh shutout of the season.
