DURHAM, N.C. - Duke was not able to overcome No. 15 Old Dominion despite a constant offensive attack, as the Blue Devils lost 3-2, in overtime. Old Dominion midfielder Katie Ueberroth had a hat-trick, scoring the final goal in the 78th minute of play.
Ueberroth's overtime goal was an unassisted effort, as she dribbled near the baseline and hesitated before slotting her shot past junior goalie Samantha Nelson. It was the cap to Ueberroth's strong performance, as she notched all three goals for the Lady Monarchs.
"It's frustrating to dominate a game and outshoot your opponent with almost three times the shots and so many more corners," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We just didn't capitalize on our opportunities. Give credit to Old Dominion, they certainly did take advantage of their opportunities."
The Blue Devils did outplay the Lady Monarchs offensively, leading in shots (28-11) and penalty corners (15-6). The strongest line of defense for Old Dominion was senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll, who had a phenomenal day in the cage, stopping 14 shots on goal, including three in overtime.
The Lady Monarchs went ahead in the 49th minute off another Ueberroth goal, assisted by senior midfielder Ally Conn, but Duke tied the score at two with only nine minutes left in regulation. Sophomore midfielder Megan Deakins scored her first goal of the season with an assist from junior forward Susan Ferger in the 61st minute.
Old Dominion got on the scoreboard early when Ueberroth had her first of the day, ripping a shot from the right side of the circle off a pass from senior midfielder Kathleen Shea in the third minute.
Duke answered back, with senior forward Amie Survilla scoring her tenth goal of the season at the 23:37 mark off an assist from freshman midfielder Mary Nielsen. Survilla shot from the top of the circle, hitting the left side of the cage past Driscoll for the score, pulling the Blue Devils even with the Lady Monarchs at halftime.
The Blue Devils will face the Lady Monarchs again later this season at Old Dominion on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. Duke will be back in action on Sept, 26 at 1 p.m. at North Carolina, with a Carlyle Cup point at stake in this conference matchup. Duke will be looking to fare better against the second-ranked Tar Heels.
"You are not going to get almost 30 shot opportunities in every game, especially in the ACC. coach Bozman said. "We need to start taking advantage of our scoring chances. We have to have a gut check here."
