COLORADO SPRINGS – Five members of the Duke field hockey team recently were selected for the U.S. U21 training squad as announced by USA Field Hockey. The group will head to Charlotte, North Carolina, at the end of January for a selection camp for the Junior Pan American Championship.
Earning spots on the training squad are recent transfers Callie Rogers and Alessia Cucito, sophomore
Ashley Stockdale and freshmen
Shae Wozniak and
Sofia Fidalgo Schioppa.
Led by head coach Ange Bradley, the U21 staff will select a group to return to Charlotte for a training camp March 6-8. The Junior Pan American Championship is set for April 7-18 in Santiago, Chile, while the 4 Nations tournament will take place July 7-15 in England.
Rogers and Cucito are the newest members of the Blue Devil family, joining Duke from Maryland and Louisville, respectively.
Stockdale is coming off her first season as a starter for the Blue Devils. A speedy attacker, Stockdale had four goals and an assist in her 21 starts this past season. The dynamic duo of Wozniak and Fidalgo Schioppa had excellent rookie seasons for the Blue Devils.
Fidalgo Schioppa started 18 of 21 contests and scored a pair of goals as a central midfielder. A great connector from the backfield to the forwards, the native of Westport, Connecticut, scored the game winner against Louisville. Wozniak, despite missing a handful of games early in the season, proved to be an offensive threat anytime she was on the turf. The Wayne, Pennsylvania, native, finished her first year with four goals and an assist, including a tally against North Carolina in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal.
The Blue Devils have hit the ground running since returning to campus, starting their offseason training on the turf and the weight room. Game play will start in March for Duke with a host of spring contests.
