DURHAM, N.C. – No. 6 Duke got off to a rapid start as the Blue Devils opened the 2026 season with a 7-0 win over William & Mary in non-conference field hockey action Friday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

Five different players found the back of the cage, led by sophomore Juliette Schulten and junior Ashley Stockdale with two goals apiece. Graduate Alaina McVeigh paced the distribution efforts with two assists on the day.

The Blue Devil offense applied constant pressure to the Tribe's defense throughout the contest putting up 37 shots with 26 coming on goal. Defensively, Duke held William & Mary without a shot after the opening stanza and off its offensive side of the field for the majority of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Blue Devils opened the game scoring in the eighth minute, with senior Kyle Massey finding the goal at the 7:32 mark. Sophomore Sophia Fidalgo Schioppa fired a shot towards the front of the net and Massey tapped it in off the redirect for a 1-0 lead.
Stockdale doubled the home team's lead with a score two minutes later as she collected the rebound off her own attempt before pushing one past W&M's Alexandra de Jesus.
Duke continued to frustrate the Tribe with its pressure in the second quarter, continuously forcing the visitors into errant passes while preventing the ball from advancing past midfield.
McVeigh extended the Duke lead to 3-0 at the 20:05 mark, going top shelf after receiving a nice feed from sophomore Lily Soldan, who wrestled the ball away from a William & Mary player. The Blue Devil offense continued to pepper the Tribe with shots throughout the second stanza, but de Jesus was up to the task collecting eight of her 19 saves in the period.
Stockdale netted her second of the day in the 29th minute, giving the home team a 4-0 edge shortly before the half. After Soldon's initial attempt off the penalty corner was saved, Stockdale collected the ball from a bit of traffic in front of the net and poked it into the bottom right corner of the net.
Schulten joined the scoring action in the 43rd minute, stretching the Duke margin to 5-0 off a one-timer from the top of the circle on a penalty corner.
Another conversion off a set piece midway through the fourth quarter pushed the home team's advantage to six. This time it was senior Maggie Kondrath with the strike. After the initial shot attempt was blocked, Kondrath stole the ball away and slid one into the back of the cage. Schulten put the finishing touches on the victory with another hit from the top of the circle on a penalty corner at the 57-minute mark.

GAME NOTES:

Duke improves to 39-15-2 all-time in season openers. The Blue Devils also move to 33-9-1 against William & Mary and 16-3-1 against the Tribe in Durham.
Juliette Schulten and Ashley Stockdale each scored a career-high two goals, while Alaina McVeigh matched her career best with two assists.
The Blue Devils held William & Mary to just three shots for the game and held the Tribe without an attempt after the opening 15 minutes.
Sophia Fidalgo Schioppa registered her first career assist.

The Blue Devils close opening weekend with a trip to Richmond, Virginia, for a date with the Spiders Aug. 30 at noon. The game will air on ESPN+.
