CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Duke had a hard fought game against No. 10 Boston College, but could not pull out the win against the Eagles, losing 3-2 at Newton Campus Field this afternoon. The 13th-ranked Blue Devils scored two goals in the first half, but the Eagles netted the game-winning goal in the 37th minute for junior midfielder Jessica Roberts' second score of the contest.
Duke (5-5, 0-3 ACC) put two scores on the board in the first period of play to match Boston College. The two ACC foes went back and forth, with the Blue Devils taking six shots to the Eagle's 13. Boston College had six penalty corners while Duke had two. Junior goalie Samantha Nelson had nine saves on the day.
"We came out with a mission and it was a relatively even game but Boston College took advantage of all its opportunities," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We had opportunities but we are not seizing them. We needed to against a strong Boston College team."
Roberts had two goals in the game, with her game clincher coming at the 37:53 mark that was assisted by junior midfielder Emily Kozniuk and senior forward Chelsea Feole. The Eagles also took advantage of a penalty corner that Roberts converted in the 23rd minute that put Boston College ahead, 2-1.
The Blue Devils were able to tie the game at 2-2 in the 24th minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Mary Nielsen, her first of the season. Nielsen took a pass from senior defender Lauren Miller and found the back of the cage less than two minutes after Roberts scored give Boston College a 2-1 lead.
Boston College tied the score initially in the 16th minute off a goal from junior forward Marlotte van den Ber. Sophomore midfielder Courtney Tavener recorded the assist, helping the Eagles pull even with the Blue Devils at one goal apiece.
Senior forward Amie Survilla got Duke off at fast start in the first minute of play with an unassisted goal. Survilla's goal was her 15th of the season, a team high. The Mountain Top, Pa. native now has 30 points on the season, also a team best.
Duke will waste no time getting back on the turf. The Blue Devils face the Boston University Terriers tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Newton Campus Field at Boston College.
