CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Duke tallied five goals in an efficient offensive performance against Boston University today at Newton Campus Field at Boston College, beating the Terriers, 5-1. Senior forward Amie Survilla notched a hat-trick, scoring the game-winning goal in the 26th minute of play.
Duke took only 10 shots to Boston University's 12, but the Blue Devils were able to connect on half of their attempts. Junior goalie Samantha Nelson had a nice day in the cage, recording six saves and giving up only one goal on a penalty stroke. Duke and Boston University had three penalty corners apiece.
"Today we were able to take advantage of our opportunities," head coach Beth Bozman said. "Boston University is a very dangerous team, and we are excited to come away with a win."
The Blue Devils established control in the first half, scoring twice to get the early 2-0 on the Terriers. Sophomore forward Jordan Miller scored for the second time this season at the 15:59 mark, taking a pass from freshman midfielder Mary Nielsen and ripping a shot from the middle of the circle for the goal.
Survilla increased the Blue Devil lead, as she scored at the 26:56 mark to put Duke up 2-0. Senior defender Lauren Miller tallied the assist, her third of the year.
Survilla continued to put the pressure on Boston University, scoring again in the 58th minute, slipping a shot past Terrier goalie Amanda Smith inside the far post from the left side of the circle from five yards out. She completed her hat-trick only a few minute later, scoring off a rebound from Smith in the 61st minute for the final Duke goal and her 18th goal of the year. Survilla has proved to be one of the best forwards in the nation this season with her consistent offensive production and unselfish play.
"Amie was dishing off passes to open teammates and didn't try to rack up extra points," coach Bozman said. "That shows the kind of player she is."
Junior forward Susan Ferger also got in on the action, scoring on a breakaway at the 57:55 mark off a long pass from sophomore midfielder Tara Jennings for her sixth goal of the year.
The Terriers had their lone goal of the day off a penalty stroke in the 53rd minute. Junior midfielder Maryette Stuart was able to capitalize on the dead ball situation, scoring her second goal of the season.
Duke will have their biggest test of the year next weekend when the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation travel to Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils will face the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins on Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. and the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. The rematch between Duke and North Carolina is a non-conference game.
