WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? The No. 6 Duke field hockey team lost its ACC opener Saturday afternoon on the road at Kentner Stadium, after second-ranked Wake Forest notched three second-half goals to down the Blue Devils, 4-1, in the battle of top-10 teams.
Wake Forest found the scoring column first with a goal at the 23:40 mark in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Nelson stopped the Demon Deacons' first shot attempt on the play but Michelle Kasold fired in the put-back to put Wake Forest up 1-0.
The Blue Devils (3-2) had several chances to tie it up in the first, and were able to knot the score just before halftime as freshman Megan Deakins got Duke on the board with 33 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, with the second career goal for the freshman. Senior Marian Dickinson fired in a penalty corner to Lauren Miller, who sent it in for Deakins to finish.
The teams entered halftime 1-1, but the Deacons pulled away with the three second-half tallies.
With 22:39 showing on the clock, Aileen Davis connected on a rebound after Nelson stopped the initial shot off a WFU penalty corner. Wake Forest increased the lead to 3-1 with 14:41 remaining when Kim Romansky notched the first of her two scores on the day, going one-on-one with Nelson in front of the cage. Romanksy's second score made it 4-1 just two minutes later, beating Nelson with a short-range shot that fond the back of the cage.
The teams were even on the afternoon in the shot column, 9-9. Duke edged out the Deacons, 4-2, on penalty corners.
“It's disappointing because we really played an even game,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “The shots were tied and we out-cornered them so it's disheartening to lose by three goals. We can compete with a team like that, we just need to finish our chances.”
Wake Forest improved to 5-0 on the season, as Duke fell to 3-2.
The Blue Devils return to Williams Field for the 2008 home opener tomorrow, taking on Drexel in a 1 p.m. contest.
