DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 6 Duke field hockey team kicked off the 2008 home slate with a 4-1 win over Drexel Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. The Blue Devils improved to 4-2 on the season and saw a huge offensive surge in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals after halftime and out-shooting the Dragons 22-6 in the contest.
Duke was led by a pair of tallies from sophomore Casey Beyel, who notched the third and fourth Blue Devil goals on the afternoon.
“We were still feeling the pain from yesterday [against Wake Forest], playing evenly against a team and still losing, and today we started out sluggish but we got it together in the second half,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We played our game today. The four-goal run was nice to see.”
Drexel had gotten on the board first with an early goal just 10:58 into the contest, as the Dragons' leading scorer Susan Ciufo converted in front of the goal to put Drexel up 1-0.
The score stayed the same until halftime, when the Blue Devils came out on fire and knotted the score at one five minutes into the second on a goal by senior Marian Dickinson. Dickinson received the pass in front of the cage from Laura Suchoski and sent it past the Drexel keeper.
Senior Ashley Pultorak put the Blue Devils up 2-1 on a tip-in from the left side, with the assist from Dickinson at the 40:09 mark. Beyel then added to Duke's lead with her pair of scores. The first came at 60:53 after a steal when Beyel sent it into the top corner of the cage. Her second goal came in the final seconds at the 69:40 point in the contest, as Beyel received the pass from Suchoski and nailed the shot from the left side of the circle to seal the 4-1 home victory.
Drexel dropped to 4-2 on the season with the loss, as today marked the first time the Dragons had fallen on the road in 2008.
Suchoski led all players with her two assists, while Dickinson added one. Dickinson also paced Duke with her five shots on the afternoon, as Beyel added four. Samantha Nelson picked up another win in the cage for the Blue Devils. The Duke defense stepped up after allowing the early score, holding Drexel to just the six shots. Ciufo led the Dragons with two.
Duke improves to 3-0 all-time against Drexel, and was able to avenge yesterday's loss on the road to Wake Forest to split the weekend contests.
Next up for Duke is two more at Williams Field, as the Blue Devils host No. 15 Ohio State next Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m., and No. 20 Old Dominion on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
