DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior Marian Dickinson scored twice for Duke to lead the ninth-ranked Blue Devils to a 3-2 win over No. 18 Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. Duke improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Buckeyes dropped to 6-3 with the loss.
Ohio State jumped on the board first with a goal just 2:22 into the contest when Emily Mikac received a feed from Linda Haussener for a breakaway following a steal at midfield. Mikac converted on the one-on-one attempt into the left side of the cage to put OSU up 1-0 early.
But Duke would tie it up just over a minute later, as sophomore Susan Ferger got the Blue Devils on the board with a goal from the left side of the circle off an assist from freshman Tara Jennings. The goal was the fourth on the season for Ferger, a team best.
As time expired in the first half, the Blue Devils received a penalty corner that allowed the half to continue through the play. After taking the corner herself, Dickinson netted Duke's second goal of the afternoon and put the Blue Devils up 2-1 entering halftime. Dickinson was assisted by both Lauren Miller and Brooke Patterson on the play, and converted from the left side as she stepped in off the corner.
Dickinson added to Duke's lead with her second goal of the afternoon, and third of the season, at the 40:27 mark in the contest, on another assist from Miller. Miller took the initial shot for Duke and Dickinson followed with the rebound, putting it past the Ohio State keeper to make it 3-1.
Ohio State added a goal with under two minutes to play in the game, an unassisted score from Mikac on a shot in front of the cage. Similar to the end of the first half, the Buckeyes were awarded a pair of penalty corners with time expired in the contest, resulting in four late OSU chances. But Duke keeper Ali Comolli came up with four big stops in the cage to seal the 3-2 home victory.
Dickinson and Mikac each had two goals on the day to pace their squads, while Miller led Duke with her two assists. Duke out-shot the Buckeyes 17-10 in the game and led 9-4 in penalty corners. Making her first start in net for the Blue Devils, Comolli recorded seven stops, while Lindsay Quintiliani made six for Ohio State.
“With the number of opportunities we had, we would have liked to have capitalized on more of them today,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “You have to be able to score when you have as many opportunities as we had.”
Duke improves to 5-0 all-time against the Buckeyes and is now 2-0 at home this season.
The Blue Devils will be back out at Williams Field tomorrow, a 1 p.m. match-up with Old Dominion. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a pair of Duke Crocs.
Following the Duke-ODU tilt, fans can stick around to watch the Buckeyes take on Appalachian State in the neutral-site game also being played at Williams Field at 3 p.m.
