EVANSTON, ILLINOIS β Duke field hockey senior
Josephine Palde scored in the 37th minute and the Blue Devil defense stood tall to upend No. 4 Maryland, 1-0, Sunday at the ACC/B1G Cup hosted by Northwestern. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils earned their first ranked win of the season.

How it Happened
- Duke came out strong with a pair of early shots and a penalty corner. The first shot off the stick from Brynn Crouse sailed just wide of the goal while Alaina McVeigh's redirect on a penalty corner found the back of the cage but was called back due to a foul inside the circle.
- The Terrapins found a rhythm midway through the period, but Duke's defense remained stout as Frederique Wollaert made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.
- Maryland had the upper hand in the second quarter, outshooting the Blue Devils, 5-0. Wollaert tacked on another save in the period as the teams headed into halftime in a scoreless draw.
- Josephine Palde, against the run of play, gave Duke the 1-0 lead midway through the third quarter with an outstanding individual effort. The senior weaved her way through a couple Terrapin defenders and beat Alyssa Klebasko near post.
- Duke, leading 1-0 after 45 minutes of action, created a fantastic opportunity to double its lead early in the fourth quarter but McVeigh couldn't get a stick on the centering pass as the Terrapins kept the game within reach.
- Down to 10 players for five minutes in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils' defense buckled down to shut out the Terrapins. Maryland had a great opportunity in the 54th minute, getting into the circle on the left side. Wollaert came off her line to cut off the angle and deny the Terrapins a look from in front of the cage.
- Maryland outshot Duke, 10-3, for the game and held a narrow 4-2 advantage in penalty corners. Wollaert finished her afternoon with four saves while Terrapin keeper Klebasko did not record a stop.
