NORFOLK, Va. β Duke junior forward
Alaina McVeigh scored a pair of goals to lead the fourth-ranked Blue Devils' field hockey squad to a 2-0 win at No. 18 Old Dominion. The Blue Devils move to 4-1 overall on the year.
McVeigh scored in the third and fourth quarters and Duke's stalwart defense stood tall to post a second consecutive shutout.
How it Happened
- Defense was the story of the opening half for both teams as Duke and Old Dominion combined for just three shots overall. The Blue Devils earned the early penalty corner, but Kira Curland's shot off the trap was blocked by the Monarch defensive penalty corner unit.
- Old Dominion earned a penalty corner in the second quarter as Duke denied the Monarchs to head into halftime in a scoreless draw.
- McVeigh put the Blue Devils up early in the third quarter, beating the Old Dominion keeper on the near post. Graduate student Charlie van Oirschot weaved her way into the penalty circle and slid in a centering pass to McVeigh who found just enough space on the near post for her fourth goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.
- Barb Civitella nearly made it 2-0 with a goal late in the third period, trying to knock down a rebound from ODU goalie Suus Broers. The talented backstop did just enough to make another save and keep the Blue Devils from doubling the lead.
- Duke goalie Frederique Wollaert made a big save on a penalty corner midway through the fourth quarter to protect the Blue Devils' 1-0 lead.
- The Blue Devils, after successfully defending consecutive penalty corners, raced right down the field to earn their own offensive corner. Duke won a penalty stroke off the play with McVeigh stepping up to the dot to bury her shot for a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
- Duke did well to defend in the final eight minutes to post its third shutout of the campaign. Wollaert finished with two saves to post the shutout. Boers had three stops.
- The Blue Devils held a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots while ODU had a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
