DURHAM, N.C.—Duke field hockey head coach
Pam Bustin is excited to announce the addition of
Bronwyn Bird and
Frederique Wollaert as graduate student transfers for the 2024 campaign.
Bird arrives in Durham after graduating from Dartmouth while Wollaert joins the Blue Devil family following the conclusion of her career with the Penn Quakers.
"We are so excited to introduce [Fred] and [Birdie] as members the 2024 Duke Field Hockey team," said Bustin. "Both have had incredible careers within the Ivy League, and we are fortunate they each have chosen Duke to pursue their master's degree and fulfill their fifth year of eligibility. Both are passionate players and committed to the team's goal of pursuing a national championship each and every day. I welcome them to WFJKS and look forward to beginning our 2024 fall journey!"
A starter in every game of her career with the Big Green, Bird brings with her incredible experience as a midfielder. She is a three-time All-Ivy pick, garnering second-team honors each season. The West Vancouver, British Columbia native had her best statistical season as a junior, scoring three goals and dishing six assists for 12 points to earn NFHCA Second Team All-Northeast Region recognition.
"Bronwyn comes to Duke after a stellar career at Dartmouth College where she was also coached by our very own
Jess Jecko for a year," Bustin said. "Her athleticism, competitiveness and collegiate experience will complement and strengthen our game day rotations."
Bird is coming off a solid senior season, registering three goals and three assists for nine points in her 15 starting assignments. Overall, for her career, Bird started 49 games and scored 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points. Excelling in the classroom as well, she was a four-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
A goalkeeper, Wollaert anchored the Quaker defense for the past two seasons. She is coming off her best campaign, playing over 1,000 minutes and making 93 saves in 17 starting assignments. Wollaert was recognized for her efforts in 2023, earning first-team All-Ivy honors.
"Fred brings experience to our goalkeeping squad," Bustin said. "Her success at Penn, along with her strong developmental background from her homeland Holland, will give us great flexibility in our goaltending needs. I am excited to see her continue to grow and thrive through the daily challenges of ACC field hockey training and competition."
After not seeing action in 2021, Wollaert started all 14 games her junior season and finished with a 1.85 goals against average and a .719 save percentage. The following year, the Hilversum, The Netherlands native lowered her goals against average to 1.84 and upped the save percentage to .744 en route to a 7-9 overall record. In two seasons in the goal, Wollaert collected 157 saves and 13 victories.
The Blue Devils are excited to hit the turf in a few weeks when the team begins its preseason training Aug. 12. Duke hosts a pair of exhibition matches against James Madison (Aug. 18) and North Carolina (Aug. 24). The Blue Devils officially kick off the 2024 campaign August 30 against William & Mary at 2 p.m., on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
