WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. β The 11th-ranked Duke field hockey team turned defense into offense to earn a 2-0 win at Wake Forest Friday night at Kentner Stadium. The Blue Devils scored twice in the first half to pick up the crucial ACC win.
Charlie van Oirschot and
Brynn Crouse had the goals for the Blue Devils while
Frederique Wollaert earned the shutout. Duke improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 against league opponents. Wake Forest is 4-7 and 0-2 in conference action.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils' high press paid off for Duke with van Oirschot providing the backhanded finish past Ellie Todd for a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Crouse started the play with an interception on an outlet pass in Wake Forest's defensive third. The Dillsburg, Pennsylvania native found Alaina McVeigh who dropped it back to van Oirschot. The graduate student midfielder dribbled her way into the circle and managed to get her shot off under pressure for her second goal of the season.
- Sporting a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of action, Duke continued its steady play into the third quarter. The Blue Devils defended a Demon Deacon penalty corner with a block by flyer Kira Curland and minutes later capitalized on a Wake Forest miscue in its own penalty circle.
- After successfully defending a pair of Duke penalty corners, Wake Forest fell victim to the pressure by Duke's forwards. This time it was freshman Ashley Stockdale with the interception. The rookie calmly slipped the ball to Crouse on her right who got her stick on it for her second goal of the year.
- Duke dominated the first half statistically, outshooting Wake Forest, 7-2. The Blue Devils had three penalty corners and held the Demon Deacons to only one.
- The Blue Devils stayed the course in the third quarter, extending the shutout streak to 17 periods β 15 quarters and a pair of overtime sessions. Duke allowed one shot in the period with Frederique Wollaert knocking down a shot to keep the shutout effort alive.
- Duke earned four penalty corners in the fourth quarter but couldn't get on the board again. However, the Blue Devil defense stood tall as usual and held Wake Forest to just one shot in the period.
- Duke outshot Wake Forest, 15-4, for the game, including 6-1 in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils earned eight penalty corners and held the Demon Deacons to just one. Wollaert finished the game with two saves. Todd had three saves for Wake Forest.

Notes
- Duke extended its shutout streak 269:43, dating back to the end of the fourth quarter against Virginia on Sept. 27. The Blue Devils have allowed just five goals in live action this season and have eight shutouts. The eight clean sheets match Duke's total in the entire 2023 season.
- Duke has allowed just one goal in live action in the past 400 minutes and only two in the past 600 minutes. Since letting in two goals at Northwestern, Duke sports a 0.21 goals against average - two goals in 580 minutes of action.
- Frederique Wollaert registered her sixth shutout as a Blue Devil and lowered her goals against average to 0.35. Her current GAA would be a Duke single-season record and rank third in NCAA history. Only 17 goalkeepers in NCAA history have registered a goals against average of 0.50 or lower. The lowest GAA in the 21st century was 0.44 in 2009.
