DURHAM β Duke sophomore
Alaina McVeigh has been named the ACC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week for her performances in a 2-0 weekend for the now ninth-ranked Blue Devils. This is McVeigh's first career weekly honor.
After missing her rookie season to injury, McVeigh has been an incredible spark to Duke's offense this season. The native of Landsdale, Pa., has scored in every game and was instrumental in the Blue Devils' victories over Longwood and No. 9 Liberty last weekend.
In Friday night's game against Longwood, McVeigh notched two goals and an assist as Duke rolled to a 9-0 win. Two days later in a top-10 matchup with the Flames, McVeigh provided the heroics as she bit a Liberty one-on-one and pushed her shot past the talented Flame goalie with 48 seconds left in the first overtime. It was her second game-winning goal this season.
The goal against Liberty gave Duke its second top-10 victory this season β a feat accomplished by the Blue Devils for the first time since 2019. McVeigh has a team-high six goals this season and 13 points overall. She currently ranks second in the ACC and seventh nationally with a 1.20 goals per game average.
Duke moved up four spots to ninth in the latest NFHCA poll, climbing into the top 10 for the first time since the Blue Devils were eighth heading into the NCAA Tournament second round game Nov. 15, 2019.
The Blue Devils open ACC play Friday night against No. 7 Syracuse at 6 p.m., on ACCNX. Duke turns around and hosts Old Dominion, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
