DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field team will look to follow up a strong opening at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge when it travels to the Virginia Tech Invitational this weekend in Blacksburg, Va.
The two-day meet will begin at 5 p.m. ET on Friday and will continue Saturday at 11 a.m. ET at the Rector Field House on Virginia Tech's campus.
In addition to Duke, the Hokies will play host to fellow ACC schools North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wake Forest, along with six out-of-conference programs – Elon, Howard, Liberty, Tennessee, UNC Charlotte and VCU.
The Blue Devils' distance runners will be looking for more of the same success they found in Chapel Hill last weekend, when they secured first and second place in both the men's and women's 3000m. Sophomore
Sara Platek took first on the women's side while senior
Lindsay Billings clocked a personal record (9:48.18) in placing second. Freshmen
Connor Wells and
Rory Cavan started their collegiate careers on a strong note, finishing first and second, respectively, to pace the men.
Both squads also boasted the top finisher in the mile, with junior
Michaela Reinhart (4:50.11) leading the women and senior
Matt Wisner (4:13.63) leading the men. Both marks are the best time in the ACC so far this indoor season.
Freshman
Luke Spurrier added another highlight to the track events, as he placed first in the men's 800m with a time of 1:55.06.
In the field events, junior
Ben Beatty returns to action this weekend after recording the third-best mark in program history in the men's weight throw with a toss of 17.53. Duke also had a strong showing in the women's high jump, led by freshman
Elasia Campbell, who placed first with an ACC-qualifying 1.75m mark.
Beau Allen qualified in the men's high jump, clearing 2.07m to take second place, while senior Estaban Suarez also qualified by clearing 4.95m in the men's pole vault.
The women's 4x400 relay team will try to repeat a first-place performance in Blacksburg, after closing out last weekend's events with a time of 3:49.68.
