Miller's Moxie
Freshman forward
Hannah Miller has enjoyed a high-scoring start to her collegiate career, leading the Blue Devils with five goals through the first six games of the season. Her three goals in two contests last weekend - including the game winner at No. 7 Iowa in double overtime - yielded the first award of her Duke career as the Malvern, Pa., native was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Miller impressed in her Duke debut Aug. 30 against ninth-ranked Penn State, putting away what would prove to be the game winner in the 28th minute. She capitalized on a quick drive up the field by the Blue Devils, finishing on an assist from
Leah Crouse for her first collegiate goal.
Holding Steady
The Blue Devils remained at No. 2 in this week's national rankings after improving to 6-0 with wins over then-No. 7 Iowa and Cal on the road. After coming in at No. 3 in the preseason edition of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, Duke moved up to No. 2 last week. The ranking marked the highest for the program since November, 2017. Duke is one of three ACC programs inside the top five of the latest national poll.
Road Warriors
Duke returns to the familiar confines of Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium following five consecutive games away from Durham. The Blue Devils went unbeaten in that stretch with three true road game victories and two neutral site wins. Four of the five victories in the recent road stretch came over ranked opponents.
Devilish on Defense
Duke tops the ACC and ranks third in the country this week in goals against average (0.61). The Blue Devils are also second in the conference and tied for 18th nationally with two shutouts on the season.
Anchored by redshirt senior goalkeeper
Sammi Steele, the defensive unit has surrendered just four goals in six outings. The squad has held five of six opponents to single-digit shots and also boasts two contests in which opponents did not garner a single penalty corner opportunity.
A Blue Devil received a nod as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on two consecutive occasions. Senior back
Jillian Wolgemuth was awarded the conference's first defensive honor of the season and Steele reeled in conference and national accolades last week. Steele has totaled nine saves in the past three games and notched four in a B1G/ACC Cup shutout of then-No. 2 Maryland, including a diving stop on a penalty stroke attempt by the Terrapins. Wolgemuth was also credited with a defensive save in the 1-0 win.
Posternak's Career Day
Lily Posternak scored the first two goals in a 4-1 defeat of California last Friday for a career-best performance by the junior midfielder. She owns three goals on the season and four for her career. Posternak is one of four Blue Devils with a multiple-goal game in 2019, joining teammates
Olivia Sahaydak (Penn State, 8/30),
Haley Schleicher (William & Mary, 9/1) and
Hannah Miller (Iowa, 9/15).
