DURHAM, N.C.—The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has announced its 2019 All-Region selections and four Blue Devils are among the 32 All-South Region choices.
Margaux Paolino, Haley Schleicher and
Jillian Wolgemuth were voted to the first team, while
Hannah Miller garnered second-team recognition.
Duke and North Carolina both landed three players on the 16-person first team as nine of the 16 hailed from the ACC. This is the fourth consecutive first-team accolade for Paolino, while Wolgemuth picks up the honor for a second time. It is Schleicher and Miller's first honor from the coaches' association.
A two-time All-American and the engine to Duke's offense over the past four seasons, Paolino closed out her decorated career with 57 points from 10 goals and 37 assists. Her 37 helpers rank fourth on the Blue Devils' career list, while the 57 points are 32nd. In 2019, the Villanova, Pa., native totaled a goal and four assists for six points in 16 games. Paolino, who missed four games due to playing for the U.S. National Team in an Olympic qualifier match, started 76 of her 77 career games.
Schleicher helped man the midfield with Paolino, scoring seven goals and four assists for 18 points. The senior midfielder started all 21 games en route to garnering All-ACC first team honors. The native of Virginia Beach, Va., Schleicher recorded two goals in the win over William & Mary and was the go-to player for penalty strokes, going 4-of-4 from the spot.
Duke's leader on defense, Wolgemuth helped the Blue Devils to finish the year ranked seventh nationally in goals against average at 1.13. She chipped in a goal and an assist, while serving as the steady force for a defense that posted seven shutouts. For her career, Wolgemuth played in 77 games, starting 71. She posted three goals and four assists for 10 points.
A rookie starter, Miller ranked second on the team in points with 11 goals for 22 points. She tied
Leah Crouse for the team lead in goals, netting a pair of goals in four different games. The Malvern, Pa., native picked up her first conference weekly award Sept. 17 after racking up three goals in Duke's wins over then No. 7 Iowa and California.
