DURHAM, N.C. - Duke came away with a convincing 7-1 victory against New Hampshire today on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. Forwards Amie Survilla and Susan Ferger turned in two excellent offensive performances. Survilla had four goals and Ferger notched a hat-trick.
"After yesterday's lackluster performance, its nice to score seven goals and come away with a pretty strong win," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We all agreed that we didn't show up yesterday. Today, we stuck to our game plan and it worked out for us."
Right from the beginning, Duke looked aggressive and determined against the Wildcats. Ferger scored in the fourth minute of play, taking a shot from the high point of the circle that deflected off a defender and into the cage to begin the offensive onslaught.
Survilla scored the next three goals for the Blue Devils, putting Duke up 4-0 in the first half. The senior tri-captain ripped another shot into the lower left corner of the cage, scoring a goal from a penalty corner at the 8:05 mark. Survilla tallied another goal in the 26th minute, taking a long pass from freshman midfielder Chelsea Amsley and quickly redirecting it into the cage. Less than 30 seconds later, Survilla struck for the third time, converting a pass from Megan Deakins. The sophomore midfielder carried the ball along the right side of the circle, beating several defenders before setting up Survilla for her third goal of the half.
With a 4-1 lead in the second half, Duke took advantage of several more opportunities with Ferger notching another goal in the 52nd minute off a penalty stroke. She was able to slip the ball past Wildcat goalie Katherine Nagengast for her second score, and the team's fifth.
The two upperclassmen capped of their terrific afternoon with two more goals in the final ten minutes. Survilla was able to score off another penalty corner at the 61:41 mark and Ferger completed her hat-trick, taking a great pass from sophomore midfielder Jordan Miller, who almost took the shot from the middle of the circle, but set up her teammate at a better angle near the side of the cage.
Duke will take its longest road trip of the season next week. The Blue Devils travel to Chestnut Hill, Ma. to take on ninth-ranked Boston College on Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. in a conference matchup. Duke will stay in town to face Boston University on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
