DURHAM, N.C. ? The seventh win in a row for the No. 4 Duke field hockey team came in dominating fashion, as the Blue Devils downed visiting Appalachian State by a score of 10-1 Saturday afternoon at a rainy Williams Field.
Duke (13-3, 2-2) received scoring from six different players, led by Amie Survilla's hat trick. Marian Dickinson and Susan Ferger each added two goals, while Lauren Miller, Megan Deakins, and Ashley Pultorak chipped in one apiece. The Blue Devils fired off a season-best 38 shots while holding the Mountaineers (2-14) to just two attempts on the day.
Dickinson's pair moved her into sole possession of fifth-place all-time in goals at Duke, as the senior now sits at 51 for her career with 10 this season. She needs six more to move into a tie for fourth.
The 10-goal output was the program's most since doing so in two straight games during the 2004 season, defeating Radford 10-0 and Davidson 13-0 in midseason contests.
“It was nice to see Amie pick up the hat trick and I'm glad we got everybody in the game today,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “It's good to get another win to keep the [winning streak] going as we head into a critical part of our season.”
Survilla started the scoring barrage for Duke with her first of the day 5:30 into the contest. She took the shot from right in front of the keeper, a close-range tip-in off Tara Jennings hard shot from the far right side of the circle. Dickinson struck second with her first of the day, taking a pass from Laura Suchoski and firing the shot from the top of the circle past the keeper 16:38 in.
Duke went up 3-0 on Ferger's first goal, a tip-in off a cross from Sarah Schoffstall into the back of the cage. The score remained 3-0 into halftime before Appalachian State got on the board with their lone score of the day two minutes into the half, as Jessie Harris converted on the chance after she played in a loose ball.
But Duke would answer just over two minutes later, as Ferger scored an unassisted goal at the 39:09 mark to increase the lead to 4-1. Deakins scored the Blue Devils' fifth goal at 40:26 and Survilla added her second at 41:36, both unassisted, to bring the score to 6-1.
Miller got her first of the day and second of the season moments later, as she took a penalty corner at the top of the circle from Dickinson and fired it past the keeper. The assist went to both Dickinson and Brooke Patterson. Survilla's third was next, followed by Dickinson's second at 48:06 ? off an assist from Miller on another corner opportunity.
The Blue Devils sealed it with their 10th goal when Pultorak tipped in a hard shot from Dickinson as she waited by the post, sending in the shot for her third of the year as Patterson got her second assist of the day and sixth of the year on the play.
Duke led 8-2 on penalty corners. ASU keeper Bridgette Street made 12 saves in the cage. Miller came up with a defensive save on ASU's second shot, the first of the season for Duke.
The Blue Devils are back at it tomorrow, hosting Longwood University in another 1 p.m. contest at Williams Field. The Lancers are 8-9 on the season.
