DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 4 Duke field hockey team earned its eighth-straight Sunday afternoon, defeating visiting Longwood by a score of 6-0 to give head coach Beth Bozman the 300th win of her decorated career at the newly-dedicated Jack Katz Field Hockey Stadium.
The Blue Devils (14-3, 2-2) scored five in the first half and added another goal after halftime to wrap up a perfect weekend, earning today's win after beating Appalachian State 10-1 yesterday for a 16-1 weekend scoring margin.
Marian Dickinson led the way with her second hat trick in four games and second multi-goal performance of the weekend, as she posted seven points on three goals and one assist. Junior Amie Survilla added two goals, while sophomore Susan Ferger tallied one.
Bozman became just the ninth Division I field hockey coach to reach the 300th plateau, as she has racked up her wins at Hofstra (15), Princeton (188), and Duke (97) over her 20-year career. She now needs just three more wins to earn her 100th at the helm of the Blue Devils.
The field hockey team also honored a long-time friend of the program before the game, as the squad dedicated its facility to Jack Katz in a pre-ceremony that featured speeches by University President Richard Brodhead, Vice President & Director of Athletics Kevin White, and Bozman ? who took turns expressing their gratitude to Katz.
“We just wanted to get through this weekend, and we're happy to pick up the two wins,” said Bozman. “Everyone is really anticipating our regular-season finale against Virginia next weekend. That will be a big game for us. It was also great to dedicate the stadium to Jack Katz. We are so happy and honored that he has given us so much.”
Duke posted five goals in the first half, which got started by Susan Ferger's unassisted goal off a loose ball in front of the cage just under five minutes into the game. Dickinson then scored Duke's second and third goals, the first being unassisted after she carried the ball down the field herself and fired off the shot from the top of the circle past the keeper at the 17:33 point. Her second put Duke up 3-0 with 20:43 gone by, as she tipped in Laura Suchoski's initial shot after a penalty corner, the assists going to Suchoski and Lauren Miller.
Survilla's first of the afternoon came two minutes before halftime, as she took a pass from Dickinson on the right side and sent it into the back of the cage. Dickinson completed her hat trick moments later, tallying her 13th goal of the season at 34:44.
It would remain 5-0 until Survilla struck again with 11 minutes remaining in the game, as she took a close-range shot from the right side off a pass from freshman Tara Jennings for her second of the game and 15th of the season. That put the Blue Devils up by six goals, where it remained.
Freshman keeper Samantha Nelson recorded her fifth shutout of the year in the cage, turning away one shot as the Blue Devil defense allowed just two all game. They were able to hold Longwood's leading scorer, Carla Binneweis, scoreless as she entered the game with 11 season goals.
Duke took 23 shots on the offensive end, led by Survilla's nine. Dickinson had five and Suchoski three. Longwood keeper Erin Bollinger turned away 11 saves but allowed the six goals. Duke held the 9-3 edge on penalty corners. The Lancers fell to 8-10 with the loss.
Duke will look to give Bozman No. 301 when the team takes the field next Sat., Nov. 1 for a 1 p.m. contest against No. 13 Virginia at Jack Katz Stadium in the regular-season finale. The Blue Devils will then host the 2008 ACC Championships from Nov. 6-9.
