NORFOLK, Va. ? Senior captain Laura Suchoski scored the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute Sunday afternoon as the No. 5 Duke field hockey team won its sixth straight and knocked off Old Dominion 2-1 at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Duke improved to 12-3 (2-2) and picked up its second victory of the year over the Lady Monarchs, who the Blue Devils also edged 1-0 at home Sept. 21.
ODU dropped to 6-10 (4-1 CAA) with the loss.
The winning streak is the Blue Devils' longest since the 2005 season, a six-game stretch that spanned from Oct. 11 through Nov. 3 for a team that eventually played in the national championship game.
“Old Dominion is a very talented team, and they made things very difficult for us in the first half,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We managed to take control in the second half and came out with what was a hard-fought victory.”
Suchoski's unassisted goal midway through the second half put the Blue Devils up 2-1 after Old Dominion had tied it up in the first. Suchoski sent in the eventual game-winner, a hard blast from the top of the circle past ODU keeper Kelly Driscoll for her second of the season.
Duke led 1-0 after junior Amie Survilla opened the day's scoring with her team-leading 10th of the season. Survilla, coming off ACC Co-Player of the Week honors last week, has now scored in five straight contests. Survilla took the shot from the left post and sent it into the back of the cage just six minutes into the game.
Old Dominion countered at the 20:38 mark when freshman Rachel Stream scored her first career goal off an assist from Amanda Bieber, as she took the pass at the front of the cage and shot toward the right post, knotting the score at one where it would remain through halftime.
Duke out-shot the Lady Monarchs, 16-6, and led in penalty corners, 12-4.
The win completed another weekend sweep for the Blue Devils, who defeated William & Mary Friday night in Williamsburg by a score of 7-1 in the first game of the Virginia road swing.
Sophomore goalie Samantha Nelson came up with three saves in the cage for Duke, playing particularly tough defense in the first half to put the Blue Devils in position to take over.
The Blue Devils return home for three more games at Williams Field to close out the regular season, hosting Appalachian State and Longwood next weekend in Saturday and Sunday contests, respectively, followed by No. 13 Virginia on Nov. 1.
Bozman needs just two more wins to reach the No. 300 milestone for her career.
