Alaina McVeigh continued her tear through the Junior Pan American Games with a pair of first-half goals to lead the U.S. U21 Women's National Team to a 2-1 victory over Uruguay in the semifinals.
Scoring nine goals to lead the United States to the top spot in the Pool B, McVeigh notched her 10th on a hit directly off the penalty corner in the ninth minute. Just over a minute into the second quarter, the veteran forward converted a penalty stroke to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead. Β
The United States continued to put pressure on Uruguay and seemingly took a 3-0 lead with 11:55 left to play in the fourth quarter. However, after a video review the goal was disallowed, leaving the U.S. with a 2-0 advantage.
Seconds later, Uruguay countered with its first goal of the game, pulling within one, 2-1, with 11:42 left to play.
Clinging to a 2-1 advantage, the U.S. did well to possess the ball in the final minutes and thwart any attacks from Uruguay to clinch a spot in the gold medal game.
The United States will take on Argentina in the gold medal game, Aug. 19 at 6:45 p.m. (ET).
