CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 14 Duke (16-7, 1-1 ACC) evened the weekend series with a 5-3 win over Clemson (18-7, 1-1 ACC) Saturday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium.
The Blue Devils' offense was led by juniors
D'Auna Jennings and
KK Mathis. Jennings finished 2-for-3 on the day while Mathis hit 2-for-4. The duo also accounted for three of Duke's five runs.
Left-handed pitcher
Cassidy Curd picked up the win in the circle after allowing three runs off four hits with a game-high four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Graduate student
Dani Drogemuller earned the save after entering the game in the bottom of the sixth and tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clemson's Maddie Moore opened the scoring with an RBI-single to center field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
- Duke battled back in the top of the third, loading the bases on two outs via a fielder's choice, a Clemson error and a walk. Sophomore Amiah Burgess found the gap in right-center field to knock in a pair of runs and put the Blue Devils ahead, 2-1.
- Redshirt junior Jada Baker added to Duke's lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double to left field. Her extra base hit scored junior Aleyah Terrell, pinch running for Mathis. Jennings then brought in Baker from second with a single up the middle to stretch Duke's lead to 4-1.
- Mathis extended the Blue Devils' edge to 5-1 with a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
- The Tigers responded in the bottom half with back-to-back solo home runs from Maddie Moore and Julia Knowler to pull within two.
- Drogemuller sat the final three batters down in order with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to secure the 5-3 victory.
NOTES
- Curd earned her second start of the weekend and improved her ledger to 6-4 overall.
- Drogemuller earned the sixth save of her career.
- Mathis has homered in two of her past three games.
