DURHAM, N.C. – No. 17 Duke jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs within the first five pitches of the game, and continued its momentum to top No. 7 Tennessee, 6-3, Wednesday night at Smith Family Stadium.
The Blue Devils picked up their second top-10 win of the season and improved to 32-12 overall, while the Lady Vols move to 37-7 on the year.
Redshirt junior
Jessica Oakland and graduate student
Tyrina Jones powered the offense with their multi-hit nights, each finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Jones homered for her fourth straight game, driving in two of six runs, while Oakland sent out a three-run blast for her 12th multi-RBI performance of the year.
Senior
Cassidy Curd was stellar in the circle against a strong Tennessee offense, working a no-hitter until the top of the fourth. Curd tossed 5.1 innings, surrendering three runs off four hits while striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seniors D'Auna Jennings and Aminah Vega opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back base hits. Oakland followed with a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left center field to give Duke an early 3-0 lead.
- Jones stretched the gap to 5-0 in the third inning with her two-run shot straight out of center field. The long ball brought in Oakland from first after she slipped a two-out single into right field.
- Tennessee fought off the shutout in the top of the fifth, posting a three-run frame using home runs from sisters Alannah and Gabby Leach, to pull within two, 5-3.
- Senior KK Mathis pushed Duke ahead 6-3 in the following frame with a sacrifice fly to left field. She brought in Jones from third, who reached on a double to left field before advancing on sophomore Layla Lamar's single to right.
- Down to their final out, the Lady Vols put together a late rally, loading the bases on a walk, double to right center field and a hit by pitch. Redshirt freshman Ava Bradshaw took over for Mathis in the circle and retired the final batter on a foul out to left field, leaving the game-tying runs stranded.
NOTES
- Jones recorded her 18th home run of the season and has now homered in four straight games.
- Oakland tallied her ninth home run as a Blue Devil and 43rd of her career.
- Bradshaw earned her first career save.
- Curd's 15 wins on the year ranks tied for first in the ACC with Jazzy Francik (Florida State) and Sierra Maness (Clemson).
