DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils fought off the run rule with an explosive six-run sixth inning, but the rally ultimately came up short as No. 14 Duke softball fell to Clemson, 13-11, in game two of the weekend series.
With the win, the Tigers leveled the series at 1-1 while improving to 32-18 overall and 13-10 in ACC play. Duke had its seven-game win streak snapped and move to 37-13 and 19-4 in conference action.
Sophomore
Layla Lamar and freshman
Gabriella Shadek led the way at the plate, both batting 2-for-3 with four and three RBI, respectively. Graduate student
Tyrina Jones and senior
KK Mathis each drove in a pair of runs during the contest to mark their 18th and fifth multi-RBI outings of the season.
Junior
Larissa Jacquez was tagged with the loss and moves to 5-5 on the year. The Eagle Pass, Texas, native entered in the top of the second and threw 1.1 innings, surrendering one run off two hits with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clemson's Macey Cintron opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Tigers an early lead.
- Duke quickly loaded the bases in the bottom half, using back-to-back walks and redshirt junior Jessica Oakland's infield single. A sacrifice fly from Lamar plated the first Duke run. Mathis added two with an RBI-single down the left field line and Shadek followed with a two-run homer to put Duke in front, 5-3.
- The visitors answered in the top of the second, connecting three singles and a two-RBI double to knot the score at 5-5.
- Clemson posted four runs over the fourth and fifth inning to regain control of the game at 9-5.
- A pair of two-run home runs from Marian Collins and Kylee Johnson extended the Tigers' advantage to eight at 13-5.
- The Blue Devils fought off the run rule with an explosive six-run sixth, sparked by Shadek's leadoff homer to center field. Jones kept a two-out rally alive, reaching on a fielder's choice to allow two runs to score. Lamar followed with a three-run blast to cut the deficit to two, 13-11.
- Duke held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the seventh and put the game-tying runs in scoring position but couldn't push anything else across.
NOTES
- Lamar launched her 13th homer for her 15th multi-RBI performance of her career.
- Shadek blasted her eighth home run of the season and her fifth in the last six games. The true freshman recorded the second multi-home run game of her career.
- Duke tallied 11 hits during the contest to mark its 26th game with double-digit knocks.
