DURHAM – The grind officially started for Duke field hockey Wednesday morning on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils hit the turf for the first of many preseason practices before the open the 2023 campaign Aug. 25 against Indiana.
The morning started with fitness testing with the Blue Devils pushing through the heat and humidity. They followed with skill work Duke will hold two practices per day in addition to an intrasquad scrimmage as well as a pair of exhibition matches at VCU and North Carolina, Aug. 17 and 20, respectively.
The Blue Devils return 91 percent of their scoring from a season ago as well as eight regular starters, including top scorer
Hannah Miller. The graduate student forward enters her final season as a Blue Devil ranked tied for 21st on the Duke career list for points (69) and 24th in goals (25). She is one point away from becoming the 21st player in Duke field hockey history to amass 70 career points.

Issy Carey is back for her second season on the field after leading all Blue Devil goal scorers with nine tallies last season. Senior
Charlie van Oirschot will be looked to lead the middle of the field once again. A two-time All-ACC pick, van Oirschot had 13 points last season and earned NFHCA All-South Region second team recognition.
Following two exhibition games, the Blue Devils host Indiana in a 4 p.m., game Aug. 25. Duke hits the road for the next weekend for the ACC/Big 10 Cup against Maryland and Northwestern in College Park, Md.
