DURHAM – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has selected the Duke field hockey coaching staff of
Pam Bustin, Ralph Boersma and
Jess Jecko as the 2023 South Region Coaching Staff of the Year as voted by NFHCA members.
The trio of Bustin, Boersma and Jecko are bolstered daily by
Wesley Boersma as the Player Development Analyst, Sports Performance Coach
Jon McNemar and Athletic Trainer
Aleah Kirsch. Bustin also was named the ACC Coach of the Year by her fellow conference peers.
The Blue Devils, under the guidance of the staff, had one of the best seasons in program history, compiling 18 wins and advancing to the NCAA Semifinals. Duke finished the 2023 campaign with an 18-5 record, including a 5-1 mark in ACC play to earn a share of the ACC regular season crown, en route to claiming its seventh berth in the NCAA semifinals.
The 18 wins are the most for Duke under Bustin's watch and rank third in program history. The 8.5-game improvement over the prior season ranks tied for 12th in NCAA Division I history.
Coming off a 7-11 season in 2022, the Blue Devils opened the year with a 3-2 win over Indiana and a thrilling 2-1 victory at No. 3 Maryland. Following a narrow 3-2 setback to No. 2 Northwestern, the Blue Devils went on a record 11-game win streak that included six top-20 wins and four top-10 victories.
Duke was outstanding defensively against ACC foes, posting two shutouts and allowing just program-low five goals in the six outings. The Blue Devils' 5-1 record gave them a share of the regular season crown with North Carolina – Duke's second in program history.
Seeded second in the ACC Tournament, Duke advanced to the ACC Championship game for the fourth time in program history, ultimately falling to 25-time champion North Carolina in the title match.
The Blue Devils were rewarded for their efforts on the field in 2023 as sophomore
Alaina McVeigh and senior
Piper Hampsch were named the ACC Offensive and ACC Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. Both also earned All-ACC first team and NFHCA All-South Region first-team recognition.
Hannah Miller also nabbed spots on the All-ACC and All-South Region first teams.
