DURHAM – Duke scored the game's final 12 runs, rallying from an early 5-1 deficit to beat Georgia, 13-5, and win the NCAA Softball Durham Regional on a historic Sunday at Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils (44-9) were on the brink of elimination after dropping the first game on Sunday, 5-3, to the Bulldogs (43-18), forcing the evening's winner-take-all contest to advance to the Super Regional. The comeback victory puts 12th-seeded Duke in the Super Regional for first time in the program's five-year history where it will face fifth-seeded UCLA next weekend in Los Angeles.
Kristina Foreman finished the decisive game 2-for-2 with five RBI, including a bases-clearing three-run double during Duke's six-run, sixth-inning surge.
Jala Wright came on in relief and slammed the door on the Bulldogs, tossing three perfect innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Bulldogs would fend off elimination by taking the day's opening game, 5-3. The two sides traded blows throughout the contest, with Duke striking first on a
Rachel Crabtree sacrifice bunt. Georgia would respond with three consecutive runs off a triple from Jayda Kearney and a double from Ellie Armistead to jump in front, 3-1.
Duke would use four singles in the fifth inning, including Foreman's RBI base hit to earn a run back, but Georgia answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame.
Jameson Kavel would get the Blue Devils within one once again following an RBI single in the sixth, but the Bulldogs added an insurance run via a Kearney single to ultimately secure the win, 5-3.
In game two, Georgia came out of the gate swinging hot bats and opened the contest with two runs in the top of the first. Foreman cut the lead in half after her RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom frame, but the Bulldogs would take their biggest lead of the contest in the second inning after plating three runs to create a 5-1 gap between the teams.
Duke would not be deterred though, launching its third comeback of four or more run this season in the third inning. With two outs in the frame, the Blue Devils caught fire, as Crabtree started the rally with a double. Foreman and
Caroline Jacobsen immediately followed with back-to-back RBI knocks to cut the Bulldogs' lead to two.
Kelly Torres completed the big inning by driving in two more runs on a double to left center field to tie the game at 5-5.
The Blue Devils were able to break the deadlock in the fifth inning with a six-run frame to pull in front 11-5. Duke loaded the bases with no outs to kick off its second multi-run inning of the game.
Kamryn Jackson drew a bases-loaded walk to ultimately give Duke the lead for good.
Kavel added an RBI sacrifice fly during the frame before Foreman's clutch double extended Duke's edge to 10-5.
Deja Davis finished off the inning with an RBI single to create a six-run buffer for the home side.
The following frame, Duke closed the door on its SEC-foe with the game's final two runs to end the contest early. Torres reached on a hit-by-pitch before
Sarah Goddard recorded a single to put two runners on base. Two batters later, Kavel cleared the bases with the team's fifth double of the night to clinch the 13-5 victory.
