LOS ANGELES – 12th-seeded Duke softball (44-10) played a back-and-forth battle but dropped the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional to fifth-seeded UCLA (47-8), 3-2, on Friday night at Easton Stadium.
Sophomore
Jala Wright (13-5) was stellar in circle for Duke, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings, while striking out two. None of her three runs were earned.
"Congratulations to UCLA, they showed a lot of fight tonight," said head coach
Marissa Young. "I thought Megan [Faraimo] continued to get better as the game went on. I'm proud of my team for their fight and I think there's some things we could do to clean up for the game tomorrow, playing better defense and making adjustments.
Jala Wright, I thought threw well and gave us a chance to fight and win this ball game, so we are looking forward to tomorrow."
In front of the near sellout crowd in their Super Regional debut, the Blue Devils met the challenge immediately.
Jameson Kavel drew a four pitch walk to leadoff the game and
Rachel Crabtree scored her from first base on a double into the left center field gap to make it 1-0.
After Wright stranded two UCLA runners in the opening frame, the Blue Devils would strike again in the second inning.
Ana Gold waited for her pitch and attacked a 2-2 ball out over the bottom of the plate, sending it off the left field scoreboard for a solo home run and a 2-0 lead.
Wright got some help from her defense in the third inning, after single by Kinsley Washington. Briana Perez was next up and ripped a double to the wall, but a perfectly executed relay by
Caroline Jacobsen and Kavel threw out Washington at the plate. Wright continued to manage the game well from there, holding the Bruins hitless in the remainder of the third inning and fourth inning.
The Bruins were able to get one back in the fifth inning, as Delanie Wisz hit a double into right center field, scoring Washington to make it 2-1. However, Wright induced her ninth ground ball out of the game to escape further damage.
UCLA would ultimately take the lead in the sixth inning, getting two runners on, before Faraimo hit an RBI single to right field to score two runs and make it 3-2, Bruins. That would prove enough for the hosts, who held on to the lead in the seventh inning.
The Blue Devils and Bruins will clash for game two on Saturday, with first pitch set for 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will also be televised on ESPN2.
Notes:
- Gold becomes the first Blue Devil freshman to hit at least 10 home runs in a season and the fifth Blue Devil overall this season.
