Peyton St. George (22-4) went six innings, allowing three earned runs, while striking out five Bruins' (48-8) batters.
Rachel Crabtree led the way with two hits, while
Caroline Jacobsen drove in both runs.
The Bruins were the first ones on the board, as they got two runners on base thanks to an infield single and a walk. Savannah Pola was able to drive a run home from third on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 UCLA, but St. George held the Bruins to no additional runs with a pair of strikeouts.
After a scoreless third inning, the Bruins added another run, this time on a Maya Brady solo home run to take a 2-0 lead. However, St. George kept her composure and kept the Bruins off the board for the remainder of the frame.
The Blue Devils got their first hit of the game in the fourth inning, as Crabtree led off the frame with a single. After
Kyla Morris pinch ran and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Jacobsen stepped to the plate. The Tallahassee, Fla., native battled back from an 0-2 count to drive a two-run blast over the right center field wall and tie the game at 2-2.
However, the Bruins regained the lead in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI double by Delanie Wisz. Duke held UCLA in check in the sixth inning, but the Bruins tacked on five insurance runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Blue Devils mounted a late comeback attempt, with runners on the corners, but were unable to plate a run.
