HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first two frames went scoreless until the Blue Devils broke through in the top of the third. Matthews opened the scoring, coming home on a wild pitch after doubling to right center and moving up on Jennings' infield single. Vega followed with a two-run home run to right field to put Duke in front, 3-0.
- Back-to-back home runs from Matthews and Jennings added to the lead in the top of the fifth. Jones followed with the third home run of the inning, a two-run shot to center field to stretch the gap to 7-0.
- North Carolina answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, using three hits and a Blue Devil error to make it a 7-2 ball game.
- Vega added an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh with her second home run of the game to pull away 8-2.
- The Tar Heels put together a late push, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a base hit but Curd retired the final batter on a swinging strikeout to strand all three runners and seal the 8-2 victory.
