CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Home runs from five different Blue Devils helped lead No. 18 Duke to an 11-6 victory over North Carolina in the conference series opener Friday night at Anderson Stadium.
The Blue Devil offense was led by multi-hit performances from senior
D'Auna Jennings, sophomore
Layla Lamar and freshman
Adelyn Matthews. The trio each finished 2-for-4 on the night and combined to drive in three runs.
Senior
KK Mathis contributed both at the plate and in the circle. Mathis hit 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs while making her fourth appearance in the circle. The West Chester, Ohio, native secured her first career victory after limiting the Tar Heels to just two runs off one hit in her two innings of relief. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jennings launched a home run to center field on the first pitch of the game to open the scoring. Graduate student Tyrina Jones sent out a three-run shot later in the inning and freshman Jayla Stafford capped the five-run frame with an RBI double to give Duke an early 5-0 advantage.
- Senior Aminah Vega homered to deep center field in the top of the second to push the Blue Devils ahead, 6-0.
- Mathis stretched the gap to 8-0 with her two-run shot in the top of the third. Her long ball brought in Lamar after she reached on a leadoff single to right field.
- North Carolina answered with a solo home run from Emily LeGette and a three-run homer off the bat of Rayna Blackwell in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
- Lamar tacked on another run in the fifth, dropping a double into the left field gap and advancing on a pair of groundouts. Matthews tallied Duke's fifth home run of the night, a two-run blast to left field, scoring classmate Gabriella Shadek after she drew a one-out walk to put Duke in front, 11-4.
- The home team plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Sanaa Thompson home run, but Duke's defense held firm in the seventh to secure the 11-6 victory.
