RICHMOND, Va. β Duke sophomore forward
Issy Carey registered a natural hat trick to lead the 25th-ranked Blue Devils to an 8-1 victory over Richmond in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon. Six different Blue Devils scored goals, including two with their first career tallies.
Duke trailed 1-0 early before scoring eight unanswered to stop a four-game losing streak. The Blue Devils improve to 5-8 overall, while Richmond drops its fifth straight to move to 5-8.
How it Happened
- Richmond's Lindsey Frank snuck a shot past Duke goalkeeper Grace Brightbill and the Blue Devil backline in the fourth minute to give the Spiders the 1-0 lead. Duke equalized with six seconds remaining in the first quarter and never looked back as it rattled off eight straight for the win.
- With time winding down in the opening stanza, Hannah Miller took advantage of the open space inside the circle and rocketed a shot off Richmond goalie Erika Latta to make it a 1-1 game.
- Duke took the lead for good in the 24th minute on a penalty stroke from rookie Macy Szukics. Josie Varney drew Latta out of the cage and a Spider defender tried to keep the ball out of the cage resulting in the stroke.
- The Blue Devils struck once again in the final seconds of a quarter as Carey forced a turnover in Richmond's defensive third. The sophomore dribbled into the circle and converted on another penalty stroke to send Duke into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
- Carey tacked on two more goals in a span of 19 seconds early in the third period to extend Duke's lead to 5-1. The first came off a blocked shot from Mary Harkins as Carey pushed the loose ball across the goal line. The second was a beautiful build-up out of the back by the Blue Devils. Josie Varney took a through ball and slid a pass across the face of the goal for a streaking Carey to tap in for the hat trick.
- Varney went at it alone in the 41st minute, firing a shot past Latta for her second goal of the season and a 6-1 lead after three periods.
- The Blue Devils added two more goals in the final 15 minutes. Junior Charlie van Oirschot redirected a Kelsey Reznick sweep off the penalty corner insert from Miller. Duke capitalized on another penalty corner in the 57th minute with sophomore Taryn Ringer lifting a shot past Kristen Rake.
- Duke held a 21-9 advantage in shots for the game and had six penalty corners. The Blue Devils did not give up a single penalty corner to the Spiders.
- In goal, Brightbill earned the start and made four saves in 30 minutes of action. Piper Hampsch came off the bench in the second half to make one stop. Charlotte Johnson closed out the game for Duke in the cage. Latta made five stops for Richmond and Rake had two in her 15 minutes of action.
