How it Happened
- After playing 80 minutes to a 1-1 draw, Duke and Louisville headed to a penalty shootout. The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead on a make from Hannah Miller and a save from Piper Hampsch. Louisville goaltender Sasha Elliott came up big for the Cardinals in the next three shots, keeping Duke off the scoreboard.
- Louisville went ahead 2-1 on a goal from Kelsey McCrudden. After a protest from Hampsch about McCrudden's play, the officials took the goal away. Louisville responded by asking for an official review, which the officials returned to their original call of a good goal.
- The excitement continued with Louisville's final shot of the evening after Elliott denied Duke's fourth chance. Emilia Kaczmarczyk stepped up to give the Cardinals the win. Hampsch blocked the initial shot and tried to hit away the rebound, but Kaczmarczyk persisted and got the final shot off just before the buzzer to capture the win. After a lengthy review of the final play, the goal stood giving the Cardinals the win.
- Burns notched her second goal of the season to put the Blue Devils up 1-0 in the 32nd minute. A pass from Logan Clouser on the right side forced Elliott to come out of the cage. Sophomore Issy Carey crashed the cage to put pressure on Elliott as the ball popped up off her pads where Burns tapped it in.
- Louisville controlled a lot of possession in time in the first two quarters, but the Blue Devils pressured the Cardinals in the final minutes of both periods and forced Elliott to make three saves in the opening 30 minutes.
- Defensively, Duke was excellent in the first half as it bent but never broke. Louisville fired nine shots in the first half and earned five penalty corners as goaltender Grace Brightbill made three stops.
- Duke stymied the Louisville offense in the second half, holding the Cardinals to just two shots and two penalty corners for 29:48. Having pulled Elliott from the cage in favor of an extra attacker with 4:35 remaining, Louisville earned a corner with 12 seconds remaining. That was all the Cardinals needed to stay alive as Julie Kouijzer fired home the penalty corner after the stop from Kelsey McCrudden.
- In the first overtime, Hampsch had her number called a few times as she came up with a pair of tough saves for the Blue Devils.
- The second overtime featured stellar stops from Elliott to send the game to a penalty shootout. Elliott made the first stop from Mary Harkins and then got a foot to a rocket off the stick of Charlie van Oirschot.
- Louisville outshot Duke 15-7 for the game and had a slight 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Brightbill finished with three saves, while Hampsch had two. Elliot finished with five stops.
