Duke improves to 6-9 overall, while Bellarmine drops to 4-11. Five different Blue Devils notched at least one point with
Josephine Palde and
Barb Civitella registering assists.
How it Happened
- Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the game as the Blue Devils attacked down the right side of the field. Palde pushed a pass over midfield to Civitella. The junior forward tapped a pass to sophomore Logan Clouser streaking down the right side. Clouser dribbled her way into the circle and took advantage of the open space to fire it past the Bellarmine goaltender for her fifth goal of the season.
- The Blue Devils fired off three more shots in the quarter, but were unable to connect, taking a 1-0 lead into the quarter break.
- Bellarmine tied the game with 2:48 remaining in the first half on a goal from Peyton Hobson.
- Coming out of halftime knotted at 1-1, senior Josie Varney put the Blue Devils ahead for good in the 38th minute. Palde passed the ball across the front of the cage where Varney was waiting on the back post to tap the ball across the line.
- Three minutes later freshman Brynn Crouse tallied her second goal of the season, redirecting a shot from Civitella from the top of the circle.
- Duke stifled the Bellarmine attack in the second half, holding the Knights to just one shot in the 30 minutes. The Blue Devils outshot Bellarmine 22-6 for the game, including a 13-3 edge in shots on cage. Duke earned just three penalty corners, while the Knights had one.
- Grace Brightbill earned the start and made two saves. Piper Hampsch came off the bench for the second half to direct the defense.
Notes
- Duke moved to 3-3 in road contests and 6-4 in non-conference games.
- Civitella registered her first assist of the season, while Palde posted her fourth helper.
- Hampsch captured her fifth win of the season as the Blue Devils pulled away in the third quarter and held the Knights scoreless.
