DURHAM, N.C.—For the 18th time overall and seventh consecutive year, the Duke field hockey team earned a spot in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship. The Blue Devils will play Iowa in the opening round on the campus of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Duke (13-7) will take on the Big Ten Champion Hawkeyes, Friday, Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Devils are 24-17 all-time in NCAA Tournament history and 10-7 under head coach
Pam Bustin. The matchup against Iowa is the first in NCAA postseason history for the Blue Devils and the 10th against a Big Ten opponent.
The Blue Devils are coming off a tough 2-1 setback to the NCAA Tournament No. 3 seed Virginia in the ACC Championship quarterfinals and meet Iowa (16-4) for the second time this season. Duke bested the Hawkeyes, 2-1, in Iowa City in the middle of September thank to a pair of goals from
Hannah Miller.
Leah Crouse and Miller lead the Duke offense with 26 and 22 points respectively. Both players have 11 goals apiece, while four Blue Devils are tied for the team lead with four assists. The Blue Devils have struggled scoring of late and are averaging 2.30 goals per game, but have been shut out just three times this season.
Defensively, the Blue Devils rank fifth in the nation in goals against average in allowing 1.04 goals per game.
Sammi Steele is the anchor to the stalwart backfield with a 1.05 goals against average and a .718 save percentage, third and fifth among Division I goalies, respectively.
Iowa, riding a five-game win streak, was the Big Ten's co-regular season champions and captured the conference tournament title with a 1-0 overtime victory over Penn State. Maddy Murphy is the offensive catalyst with 12 goals and 12 assists for 36 points, while Katie Birch has 24 points off seven goals and 10 assists. Ellie Holley has a team-best 11 assists.
The winner Friday advances to play the winner between North Carolina and Stanford or Miami. The second round gets underway Sunday. Stay tuned for ticket information and how to follow the action.
