DURHAM, N.C. – As the Blue Devils celebrate the past, present and future of the program, GoDuke.com will feature several Blue Devil alumnae to highlight memories from their collegiate careers and the paths they've taken to success in their professional fields.
Amy Stopford, 2003-06
A midfielder from nearby Hillsborough, N.C., Stopford was a first team All-America selection as a senior in 2006. She was also tabbed to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 2004 after helping to guide the Blue Devils to the national championship contest. During her career at Duke, Stopford saw the program advance to the title match three times and the national semifinals once.
Stopford totaled 37 goals and 18 assists in 88 career contests, ranking her among the top 15 players in program history in career points. She was a three-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)'s All-South Region team and a two-time All-ACC pick.
She graduated from the university in 2007 with a degree in Earth and Ocean Sciences and went on to receive a master's degree from Duke in Global Health.
Can you update us on where you are now and your current work?
Amy Stopford: I am living in Durham, N.C., with my fiancé (recently engaged!) and two dogs. Over the summer, I work for Broadreach, Inc., a company that runs experiential education and volunteer trips abroad in which I teach about global public health and medicine (I earned my Masters of Science in Global Health from Duke). During the rest of the year, I teach yoga, cycling and strength training classes locally.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time at Duke?
AS: There are so many! Among the top are beating UNC 5-0 my freshman year for the first time in school history, making it to the final four and national championship game for the first time in school history as well, upsetting UNC to go to the final four my sophomore season, scoring a stroke in OT to beat UNC at home my senior season, beating No. 1 Maryland in College Park and finally, in the 2006 national semifinal, our team scoring two goals in less than two minutes left in regulation to tie Wake Forest and send the game to OT.
I have many fond memories off the field too. Laughing in the locker room before games, dance parties and just in general a huge comradery among the team.
What was your favorite spot on campus?
AS: By far Cameron Indoor Stadium. I am lucky enough to be able to go to every game now with my fiancé. My second choice would be the gardens.
Who were some of your favorite professors at Duke?
AS: I loved intensive Spanish. It made me realize how much I love learning foreign languages and about other cultures.
I also really enjoyed oceanography — I believe the course was called The Fluid Earth. The professor, Susan Lozier, remains to this day a close mentor and role model. She is incredible.
Favorite food on campus?
AS: Sitar's chicken tikka masala. Yum.
Who were some teammates who influenced you either on or off the field?
AS: Kirsten Bostrom was my constant buoy. She always complimented me and gave me a lot of confidence. She's such a kind person.
Cara Lopresti was my best friend on the team and laughing with her both during practice and outside of practice was crucial to my happiness and surviving a rigorous schedule.
As I player, I always looked up to Laura Suchoski, even though she is two years younger than me! Her tenacity and skill was unrivaled. She was one of the best players I had to opportunity to play with.
What advice would you give to current or future Blue Devils?
AS: To enjoy all the opportunities that you have in college. Four years is such a short period of time, yet this four years will leave a mark on your heart and will lead you in directions you may have never thought you would go. Cherish this time. If you love to dance or play music, take dance or music classes. If you love other cultures, make an effort to study abroad. Dare to explore what makes you tick and never stop striving to learn more about yourself, your peers and the world.
