LANCASTER, Pa. – Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sammi Steele notched her second shutout in as many contests to help fourth-ranked Duke top No. 6 Maryland, 1-0, Friday evening in B1G/ACC Cup action at the home of USA Field Hockey.
Steele totaled a season-high nine saves against 12 shots and four penalty corners by the Terrapins (1-2) as the Blue Devils remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0.
“It wasn't our prettiest game, for sure,” said head coach Pam Bustin. “We had moments where we played our Duke field hockey and it worked and we capitalized. And then we had those moments where we weren't quite 'on' and who we normally are. I was just proud of the grit. They really did fight. They really did stick together and find a way to keep shutting down a great opponent. Maryland is a great team.”
The match featured an upbeat tempo from the opening minutes, but remained scoreless as Steele made a pair of early saves and Maryland defender Welma Luus stepped in for a defensive save on a Blue Devil corner. Steele went on to record five more saves and Duke generated several opportunities on its attacking end. However, neither side would break through before the end of the half.
Maryland led in shots, 9-5, at the intermission.
Freshman back Jillian Wolgemuth set up a Blue Devil possession early in the second period and junior Ashley Kristen was able to corral a long ball off the stick of Alexa Mackintire and put it in at the back post. Her first goal of the season broke the scoreless tie in the 42nd minute.
Duke's defense held strong behind another Steele save on a Maryland corner before the Terrapins' Kelee Lepage rocketed a shot off the post in the 56th minute. Steele defused another dangerous opportunity inside the circle a short while later to prevent another Maryland look on the cage.
“Sammi was outstanding tonight, just outstanding,” Bustin said. “She made some great saves in there. That really gave us the energy we needed to keep the ball going forward.”
The Terrapins pulled their goalkeeper inside the final three minutes but the Blue Devils were able to withstand the final moments of pressure to secure their second consecutive shutout against a ranked opponent.
Duke faces No. 16 Northwestern in the B1G/ACC Cup Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster. Live stats will be available here.
