COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Duke University graduate Stefanie Fee has been named to the 16-player roster that will represent the United States in field hockey at this summer's Olympic Games in Rio. Fee, who has been a defender on the U.S. women's national team since graduating in 2012, will make her first Olympic appearance.
Fee and Team USA are coming off of claiming the bronze medal at the Champions Trophy in London last month. Based on its performance against some of the world's top-ranked teams, the U.S. moved up to No. 5 in the most recent International Hockey Federation (FIH) world rankings.
Fee also helped the U.S. win gold at last summer's Pan American Games in Toronto, which solidified the team's trip to Rio. She earned her 50th cap as a member of Team USA in February during a four-game series with Argentina.
A standout on the back line for the Blue Devils, Fee started every game for Duke during her four years in Durham. She garnered All-America, All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament Team accolades as a senior in 2011, in addition to being named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-South Region first team. During her collegiate career, Fee guided the Blue Devils to a pair of NCAA quarterfinals appearances and a trip to the ACC title match in 2011.
“I could not be more proud and excited for Stef Fee!” said Duke head coach and former U.S. Olympian Pam Bustin. “To represent the United States in the Olympic Games is the pinnacle for a U.S. field hockey player. It is an honor and a privilege that is earned through a dedicated work ethic and an unwavering belief. Since graduating from Duke, Stef has committed her life to becoming the elite athlete that she is today. Her sense of team, trust in the system and her professional approach to improvement have put her in the position to be selected to the 2016 Olympic Team. We could not ask for a better ambassador! Congratulations to Stef Fee from the entire Duke True Family! Go USA!”
Heading into the Olympic Games competition with a roster that includes nine returning Olympians, U.S. is in a challenging pool made up of No. 2 Argentina, No. 3 Australia, No. 7 Great Britain, No. 10 Japan and No. 13 India. The U.S. will open Pool B play at the Olympic Games with a face-off against Argentina Sunday, Aug. 6.
