DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils rose to the challenge in a pair of early exhibition contests, posting shutouts against Davidson and Wake Forest over the weekend at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
“The excitement of having a chance to play in an organized setting against another opponent is always fun,” said head coach Pam Bustin. “This early in preseason, it's such a great opportunity to work on some game situations and some personnel connections that you can't get in a regular practice. We were able to interchange and get everybody in and in different spots. It plays an important role in what we're trying to do this preseason.”
Duke welcomed the Wildcats Saturday, Aug. 15 for three 20-minute periods of scrimmage play. Six different Blue Devils found the back of the cage in that contest, led by junior forward Heather Morris' three tallies. Morris also logged an assist, as did sophomore back Sarah Furey, who found classmate Ainsley Gill for the first goal of the game. Freshman midfielder Caroline Andretta recorded her first score in a Duke uniform, finishing on the feed from Morris in the second period.
Sunday's action saw ACC opponents Duke and Wake Forest go head-to-head in a standard format of two 35-minute halves. Morris got things going early, pushing a rebound past Wake goalkeeper Valerie Dahmen in the sixth minute.
The Demon Deacons pressed forward in response to the deficit, but the Blue Devils would score again before the end of the first half, converting on a penalty corner opportunity in the 30th minute. Sophomore Alyssa Chillano finished on the low drag with junior Savannah Story and senior Aileen Johnson assisting on the play.
Duke's defense remained stalwart in the second half, preserving the 2-0 preseason victory.
Redshirt senior Lauren Blazing and junior Kelsey Wagner split time in goal for the Blue Devils while Dahmen registered nine saves on the afternoon at the other end.
For the exhibition contest, Duke placed 11 of its 19 shots on the cage and totaled nine penalty corners.
The Blue Devils resume preseason training this week before heading to Virginia Beach, Va., to take on American University Saturday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Duke kicks off the 2015 campaign on the road, facing California and Stanford in Stanford, Calif., Aug. 28 and 30.
