VALENCIA, Spain – Former Blue Devil defender Stefanie Fee and the United States' women's national field hockey team concluded pool play at the Hockey World League Semifinals Tuesday with a match against Ireland.
After opening the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Uruguay June 11, Team USA logged a 4-1 defeat of South Africa two days later. Following an initial goal by South Africa early in that match, Fee and her fellow defenders were able to keep their opponents off the board despite numerous attacking attempts. In its third contest, the squad played to a 2-2 draw with Germany June 14, setting up Tuesday's final pool match against Ireland.
The U.S. won nearly every statistical category – leading in possession, shots on goal, circle penetrations and corners – but ultimately fell to the Irish, who are 14th in the current International Hockey Federations world rankings – by a 2-0 score.
Team USA will now prepare for a matchup against the second or third-place finisher in Pool A in the quarterfinals Thursday, June 18. The tournament semifinals are slated for Friday, June 19 and the final Sunday, June 21.
The top three finishers in the Hockey World League Semifinals will earn 2016 Olympic qualification.
