DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University associate head coach Jarred Martin was named the United States Junior Women's High Performance head coach for the U17 squad, as announced last week by USA Field Hockey.
“Jarred Martin has always been involved and connected with USA Field Hockey, first as a player for the U.S. Men's National Team and later in various roles with the Junior Teams,” said Janneke Schopman, leading and managing the JHP program since October 2014 as well as being the U.S. Women's National Team Assistant Coach. “He is a charismatic young coach with experience and excited to share his knowledge with the U-17 age group. I think he is a coach who can teach the players the skills necessary but also challenge them to understand what is necessary to be an elite athlete.”
Martin's experience with USA Field Hockey has been extensive, as he was a member of the U.S. men's national team for 12 years before retiring in 2012. He recorded 104 international caps as a starting center forward and traveled to 25 countries on four different continents to represent the United States. Martin competed in three Pan American Games, two Olympic qualifiers, two World Cup qualifiers and three Pan American Cups with Team USA.
Martin has been involved with coaching the U.S. U17 program for the past five years, traveling to Canada and Holland, and has served as a coach fort the South High Performance Training Center. He earned a Level III Accreditation from USA Field Hockey in the summer of 2010.
“I am really excited for the position and I would like to thank Janneke for the appointment as the U-17 Head Coach,” said Jarred Martin. “I have been involved with the U-17 group for the past five years and have really enjoyed my time with the trainings, tours and learning from other top coaches in the country. I am glad I can continue to work with the U-17s and help develop future national team players.”
Martin enters his ninth season as a member of the Duke coaching staff this fall. He has helped guide the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances in that time, highlighted by a trip to the NCAA championship match in 2013.
“I am extremely proud of Jarred and excited for his opportunity to continue to develop our junior group of U.S. athletes,” said Duke head coach Pam Bustin. “He is a long-time, dedicated member of USA Field Hockey and a coach with a fantastic passion for teaching. In my opinion, U.S. Field Hockey made a great decision!"
