During Bustin's debut season as the head of the Blue Devil program, she coached four women to All-America status and six to All-South region honors. As a team, the Blue Devils defeated the eventual 2011 NCAA Champion Maryland 2-1 on its way to the ACC Championship game. Off the field, the team earned an impressive team GPA of 3.427.
Throughout her collegiate career, Bustin was a defender and is considered to be one of the best players in UMass history. She was a first team All-American, first team All-Atlantic 10, A-10 All-Tournament team selection and a nominee for the Honda Broderick Award, which is given to the field hockey national player of the year. Bustin led her team to four NCAA Tournament appearances and it's first ever Atlantic 10 championship.
Bustin was also very active on the national and international levels, serving as captain of the U.S. Under-21 National team from 1986-1988. In 1989, she led the team to a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Games. She also played on the U.S. National team from 1988-96 participating in the International Cup, World Cup, World University Games, Olympic Qualifier Tournament, and the Champions Trophy. Bustin was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in Atlanta, Ga.
Bustin began her coaching career at Temple where she worked as an assistant coach from 1990 to 1992, and then served at Michigan State in the same capacity until 1997. She earned her first head coaching position at Hofstra before moving to Louisville in 1998. Over the next twelve years, Bustin led the Cardinals to six conference Championship games and three Big East titles. She was named conference Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2008.
