QUILMES, Argentina - Team USA finished fifth in the BDO FIH Men's World Cup Qualifier held in Quilmes, Argentina from Nov. 14-22. Jarred Martin played in all six contests, scoring one goal and helping the Americans win their final game over Chile, 2-1.
The U.S. squad started off slowly with losses to Ireland, Argentina and the Czech Republic to begin the round-robin tournament, but battled back to go 1-1-1 in the final three games.
In the final match of group play, the U.S. National Team was able to draw even with Belgium, 3-3. The Belgians notched the first goal in only the fifth minute of play, but Team USA was able to respond to every score. With a 3-2 lead in the final minutes, it appeared that Belgium would hold onto the win, but a determined U.S. side scored in the 70th minute off a shot from Martin at the top of the circle that found the back of the cage.
It was the first goal of the tournament for Martin, and an important one, that gave Team USA a positive result heading into its final match against Chile once again.
This time, the Americans prevailed with a 2-1 win over their South-American rivals. The U.S. tallied two goals off of penalty corners in the 48th and 64th minute to gain a two goal advantage over the Chileans. Chile scored in the 70th minute, but it was not enough to overtake Team USA.
Argentina won the championship match over Belgium, 4-3, and will advance to the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 in India.
