NORFOLK, Va. - Junior forward Susan Ferger scored the game-winning goal in the 18th minute of play to give Duke the win over No. 20 Old Dominion, 3-1. The Blue Devils scored three goals in a little less than 37 minutes to earn a victory on a cold and cloudy day in Norfolk, Va. this afternoon.
"They are a talented team," head coach Beth Bozman said. "I thought we played well and we were able to put together two solid halves. Our passing put us in good position and we were able to finish off our scoring chances."
Old Dominion had a defensive turnover that proved to be a costly mistake as Ferger scored at the 17:43 mark off pass from freshman midfielder Chelsea Amsley. Ferger one-timed the pass from her teammate to swiftly redirect the ball past Lady Monarch goalie Kelly Driscoll. The goal was the second in as many days for Ferger, which now gives her eight goals on the year, the second-highest mark for Duke.
The 15th-ranked Blue Devils (8-7, 0-4 ACC) were able to win the rematch against the Lady Monarchs with an aggressive offensive attack and a stifling defense. Duke produced more scoring opportunities by outshooting Old Dominion by a large margin (16-4) and taking advantage of penalty corners (5-2). Junior goalie Samantha Nelson continued her consistent play from yesterday, recording two saves and only letting in one goal late in the game.
Senior defender Lauren Miller put Duke on the scoreboard first with a goal off a penalty corner in the 13th minute. Miller fired a shot from the crest of the circle that ripped through the defense and into the right side of the cage. The goal was Miller's fourth of the season, the most of any Duke defender.
Duke scored its third goal off a fast break that senior Amie Survilla was able to convert after some nifty passing with sophomore midfielder Megan Deakins. The Blue Devils took the ball almost the entire length of the field before Survilla laid off a pass to Deakins. Deakins completed the give-and-go pass right back to Survilla who netted the final Blue Devil goal in the 36th minute. The final goal also was the 20th this season for Survilla, who continues to be one of the offensive statistical leaders in the NCAA.
The Lady Monarchs were not able to create much of a counter-attack and struggled to penetrate the stingy Blue Devil defense. Old Dominion used a penalty corner to tally its only goal of the game in the 44th minute. Rachel Stream scored for the Lady Monarchs, notching her fifth goal of the season.
Duke moves on from Virginia to Ohio, where the Blue Devils will face Ohio University and Ohio State next weekend. The Blue Devils will take on the Bobcats on Oct. 24th at 1 p.m. before finishing up against the Buckeyes on Oct. 25th at 1 p.m.
