DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 9 Duke field hockey team guarded a 1-0 lead at the half and the score was knotted at one with eight minutes to play before fifth-ranked North Carolina converted on the game-winner to down the Blue Devils, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Williams Field in ACC and Carlyle Cup action.
The ACC's leading scorer, Danielle Forword, notched the Tar Heels' second goal as Duke was forced to play a man down on one of four yellow cards assessed in the contest. Forword took the pass at the edge of the circle off a UNC penalty corner at the 62:06 mark in the game, off assists at the top from Kate Scholl and Katelyn Falgowski.
The teams battled evenly for the entire contest, with Duke leading in the shot column 12-11 and UNC taking five penalty corners to Duke's four. Ali Comolli made five stops in the net for Duke but allowed the pair of scores, while Carolina's Brianna O'Donnell and Jackie Kintzer split time in the cage and recorded four saves between them for the Tar Heels.
“We certainly played [North Carolina] evenly today,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We have five freshmen in our lineup, and every game we play we are going to get better. We already have.”
“This was a good example that we can play with the top teams in the country. By the end of the season we're going to come up with some big wins.”
Duke led 1-0 after junior forward Amie Survilla fired in the unassisted shot from the far right side into the bottom left corner of the cage 14 minutes in for her third goal of the season.
The Duke defense was able to control the ACC's toughest offensive unit, holding the Tar Heels to six first-half shots and keeping Forword ? who ranks second in the conference in shots ? without one in the opening stanza. The half ended with the Blue Devils still guarding the 1-0 advantage.
Carolina knotted the score 12 minutes into the second half, an unassisted score from Britt van Beek from the left side. It remained tied until Forword's chance with eight remaining, as the Blue Devils were unable to counter despite a few late opportunities.
The loss dropped Duke to 6-3-0 (0-2-0 ACC), while UNC improved to 7-2-0 (1-0-0) on the season.
Lauren Miller and Susan Ferger each took three shots for the Blue Devils in the game, while Forword and van Beek each ended with three for UNC. The shots were even at five in the second half.
The game was the first Carlyle Cup match-up of 2008-09, as Carolina picked up the first win of the season-long competition between the local rivals. The Carlyle Cup has gone on since 2000-01 and is sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C.
Duke remains at home for two more next weekend, hosting No. 12 Boston College on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m., followed by Boston University Oct. 5 at 1 p.m., both at Williams Field.
